Nice designs, all.
I like #1 and #3 best, leaning most towards #3 because I've always been a sucker for drop points.
If you ever get a #3 ready for sale, I would take one. When you get ready to take commissions, I'd like one of those too.

Yeah, Perrin is one of those guys who are huge in their niche and can sell anything long as there's that little personal style of his in there. Personally, I can't ever see paying that much for a pure holdout.
Check out Laci Szabo. Another guy who charges premium prices for stuff that has just his own little twist on 'em.

Personally, I can't ever see paying that much for a pure holdout. Check out Laci Szabo. Another guy who charges premium prices for stuff that has just his own little twist on 'em. I've seen the Szabo stuff before...and was never really a fan. I mean, they're cool...and he certainly puts effort into the designs, but they're a little bit too 'over the top' for me I guess lol. I can't help but think they were designed by a 15yr old anime/fantasy addict...even though I know they weren't, and that there's functional reasons for each design aspect. Guess they remind me too much of something being sold by that cheap knife seller at the swap meet, if you know what I mean? I did take a look at those little hideaway knives. VERY cool idea. I think I'll be making something similar for the wife pretty soon. They aren't much on par with the knives I've got setup above...but they're still incredibly cool =D. I just spent some time going through a couple knife seller's sites looking at comparable knives to mine. Thing is...there's nothing 'comparable'. They're all overdone with weird edges, useless angles, and goofy protrusions with holes drilled in them for no apparent reason lol. I mean...I guess if you have a useless protrusion you may as well drill holes in it to keep the weight down...but still, wth? I guess in the 'tac-knife' world, the more outlandish the design the more attention you get...and thus, more sales. Still, in my opinion there's something to be said for graceful lines and a bit of elegance in a blade you carry and use every day, even if it has a bit of a 'tactical' flavor to it. Never know...I guess when I finally run out of blade styles I'll have to start adding weird design aspects here and there, and use 'utility' for the excuse =D. Cris

When you get ready to take commissions, I'd like one of those too. Thanks =D! Once I make Random's, I'll be working out a pricing schedule based on the effort/cost involved, and letting you guys know. Like I said, I'll be more than happy to make these for you guys if you want them...I just don't want any money in hand before they're made lol =D. Same goes for the commissions...until I'm out of school (3-4yrs) I probably won't be taking them 'officially', but if there's something you want made, and I'm in a stable situation with time, tooling, and the finances to make it...we can talk about anything. I'm just very leary about taking money in advance at the moment lol, and most 'commissions' require substantial effort, as well as being 'custom' to the person ordering. That makes reselling them difficult at best if the person backs out. Anyhow though...I should know more about all of this over the next month. I have to finish moving today, then see about moving my forge setup and workspace (man that's going to SUCK) this evening or tomorrow. Once I'm situated and making things...it'll all clear up I'm sure =D. Cris

Lots of it really is just pointless stuff in the name of marketing. Stick with your designs. Simple and clean is sometimes just more beautiful AND functional than overdone. On a similar note, ShivWorks tends to make pretty down to Earth defense knives (their Lil' Loco is a little bit similar to #2's shape, sorta maybe), but the price is omgwtfbbq. $50 bucks for something the size of your index finger and $300 for a production roach belly.

Yeah...a lot of money lol. Most of the blades we're looking at are under 4" overall length it seems. Mine are about 6.5" oal. I may end up shortening them some, depending on how the first series end up feeling in the hand. You can get away with an AWEFULLY short grip with a nice lanyard to stabilize things. I probably wouldn't take more than an inch to an inch and a half off though. 4, 3, 1, 2 ;D Good job mate, have a karma Thanks! Anyhow, we're situated in the new house now...all that's left is to get my tools moved over and setup and get going! Cris

Cris: I really REALLY like the look of number 3. It looks very ergonomic to me and I think would be very comfortable in my hand. I've been looking to pick up a couple 'carry' knives... one for camping/defence/utility and another for every day carry/defence... and the #3 design is very much to my taste. If you do get around to making these I'd maybe be interested.

As far as making them...I got my flattening anvil, tools, little forge, bigger forge, and my tree stumps (I've got like 7 of them lol) moved today. My post anvil is STILL buried 2' deep in the ground lol...and I've got to move my work table too. Hopefully that'll be done by Wednesday...and if I can deal with the 114* heat, I'll be setup by the weekend. It'd be pretty nice to get a couple of these made up and tested =D. Cris

Oh come on, now, ya wuss. You're going to be shoving metal into a friggin' fire and beating it with a hammer, quit whining about it being a little warm outside. ... Only been upper-90's here.

LOL, normally I'd agree...but this house was designed with an AC unit and a swamp cooler...and this time of year, the swamp cooler is 100% useless due to the humidity. 111* and 28% today lol. Screw that. It makes it where you NEVER cool off...you don't get much sleep cause it's so fookin hot =/. I wish it would just get it over with and rain. Humidity is MUCH more bearable when it's in the form of rain drops =p. Doesn't cool it off a hell of a lot...but it does somewhat, and...there's usually air movement when there's rain lol. I know some of you guys deal with a LOT more humidity than we do here...but the combination of heat, still air, and humidity here during monsoon season (unless it's actually raining...then it's like being in a hurricane lol...it's just nuts lol. Anyhow...it'll be VERY cool to be able to show you guys something in the 'WIP' stages over next week...so that's what I'm working for =D. Cris

Yeah, you wouldn't catch me living out that way for pretty much those reasons. I'm not so fond of the climate here in central VA, either. Tough it out, you. ;D

Once we're out of school...it'll be Colorado, Nevada (Carson/Tahoe area)...Oregon/Washington...anywhere where there is SEASONS and COOL weather lol. As for forging in it...it's not so bad. The forge adds relatively little heat...less than you'd think anyhow. Just setup a cross fan and you almost don't know it's there. Cris

Cris... I feel you man. I'm from NorCal... its VERY temperate there. I have also lived in Colorado and Oregon and loved it in both places. Right now... I'm in Georgia. You wanna talk heat and humid? We have not been QUITE as hot as you in AZ... but WAY more humid. Lately its been high 90's low 100's... but anywhere from 40% to 80% humid... its god awful swamp weather! I step outside to get the mail, I'm covered in sweat by the time I get back to my front porch. I hate it.

Sounds like here in my part of VA. Good times. Is it autumn yet? What's Autumn lol?? We have two seasons...Hot, and Cold. I know how that goes Shadow...humidity sucks =/. Right after it rains here in the summer (that's what the monsoon's are lol) we have humidity like that for a day or so, and are STILL 110-115*! No more sempriniing on my part though...got work to do =D. Cris

I do that a lot, too, on my smaller (and sometimes bigger) blades. Heck, I've caught myself using a kukri by gripping the narrow part of the blade, just before the curve, so that I can use the apex of the belly to get at little things. I'm still trying to decide if I prefer the "sheep's foot" or wharncliffe styles or the straight-back knives for general use, but I have no doubt that for fighters, a spear-point is my favorite, preferably with a full double-edge. Just for reference, I rather like this wikipedia write-up on knife points: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade#Patterns_of_knife_bladesThough I don't know if I agree with the straight-back being "normal" as opposed to all the other types...
