Sorry can't really answer your question, but I’m guessing that "the best" gauntlets are ones which are custom made to fit your hand perfectly. How about some of these www.medievalrepro.com/Gauntlets.htm they are a little out side the $250 range

What are you using them for? If you're looking for SCA legal finger gaunts, you're gonna have to find something that covers the finger tips. Are you looking early or late 15th century? If I remember correctly, early means you could look at hourglass gaunts and wisby gaunts. Those'll set you back about 400 bucks for SCA legal ones like the ones from armourandcastings.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=227, while the last half of the 15th century was using mitten gauntlets and the finger gaunts were falling out of style. Mitten gauntlets are less expensive and offer better protection than finger gauntlets do. Where SCA Legal finger gaunts will set you back a pretty penny, mitten gaunts and clamshell gaunts can be had for a little bit of nothing. If you're not worried about a particular society or group's laws and are just looking to build a nice looking kit, maybe you could try something like these www.bytheswordinc.com/p-3639-finger-gauntlets-gh0200.aspxHope this helped!

If it was me, I would go with the Armour&Castings models...specially that one on special. I only heard good things about them, but have no personnal experience with them myself...of course, we don't know how much would be the shipping to Australia?

You can get a finger kit for about $100 here: roughfromthehammer.com/You would get the finger plates and knuckles and rivet them onto a strip of leather. The leather strips would then be sewed onto the fingers of a leather glove. You would wear that with a half gauntlet. If you get as far as making the fingers, making a half gauntlet out of leather will not be hard for you at all.
