My smith wants to charge me $100 for a basic leather (pure leather, no wood, metal, wool, etc) scabbard for my sword.... I for one think that is a rip off for a cheap sheath, and will look for work elsewhere. Anyone know of any high quality sheath makers out there? I don't care much for historical accuracy or looks. I want durability and utilitarian. Heck, it dosn't even have to be leather. Kydex or nylon will do too. So far, I've found, www.dbkcustomswords.com/And their cheap line seems great at a fair price, but I am not too keen on the one year waiting period... Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Hello bergthor, I definitely recommend Valiant Armoury's Custom Sword Shop. Their work is simply phenomenal. Plus, Sonny's customer service is second to none, which I can vouch for personally. Not completely up yet, but the CSS forum is at valiant-armoury.com. Also, $100 is not necessarily out of line if it's well made... armor.com/sword_scab.html

Why buy one when you can make your own? That's what I started doing a few years back for my own swords. It's not nearly as hard to do as you think it would be. The process is quite simple and inexpensive, I spend in the area of $30-$40 to make one including the metal chape. I have alot of respect for craftsmen such as DBK and Christian Fletcher; but spending so much money on something I can do myself is just counterproductive to my hobbies. Plus making scabbards gives me the ability to make exactly what I want myself quickly in a few days without waiting on anyone's list or sending my sword to someone. Here are some detailed instructions: www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_scabbard.asp If you are interested in going this route, here is a link to other sellers of items that you would need to make a great looking scabbard: /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=14090 I will give one caveat though. If you try it once, you'll want to do it for all your swords!

Slayer,
Please send info on custom scabbard work. Have an old Kris Cutlery Excalibur, (with brass "blade catchers" or half-swording grips on the ricasso, sort of like a scaled-down barbarian sword), that I have been wanting a scabbard for.
Thank you very much for your time.

Sure thing; I'll do it in 15 minutes or so... I have to go eat dinner, even if it is 1:AM. Thanks for the interest! -Slayer

Hey Slayer,
Thanks mucho for the PM's and links. Very nice work. Really. Since I'm a compu-idiot and couldn't figure out how to attach files to the PM's, I attached a couple of photos of the sword I would like a scabbard for.
If still a possibility, I'll send measurements via PM.

PM sent. Now, onto the important stuff: now that is a COOL sword! May I inquire as to how much it cost originally? I may have to ask around to see if I can get one 2nd hand if it's budget friendly... -Slayer
