It's a decorative saber, probably made in India or Pakistan, that's probably been rehilted.
I'm sorry to say it's neither functional, nor worth much if anything.

I would not be so quick to judge. I think it needs closer inspection. The hilt is reminiscent of a Civil War D guard bowie. Some of them were very crude often made by the families of or men who carried them.

I would not be so quick to judge. I think it needs closer inspection. The hilt is reminiscent of a Civil War D guard bowie. Some of them were very crude often made by the families of or men who carried them. If I hadn't seen plenty of these things before, you may have a point. Alas, the poor blade geometry, the repetitive etching pattern, and the sheet-metal guard are dead giveaways. Of course, it may have sentimental value. Hang it on a wall and enjoy it for what it is. "Espada Ancha" is just Spanish for "Broadsword". I know how you feel, you want to narrow down information on the design to attach more meaning to it. Been there. Seen plenty of guys who picked up an "antique" katana and MUST know what the inscription on the blade is, even after the sword has been identified as a Chinese fake (the inscription is usually gibberish, in those cases). When it comes right down to it, it's just a decorative knockoff of a simple, d-guard saber.

It looks like there was some kind of sticker or logo on the grip. There is a light oval patch on the wood. I'm inclined to lean towards a tourist piece.

Dude - it is something personal from your Grandfather, It is very important. Have a couple from mine that has no real value but worth more than anything in my collection.
