Cold steel has a couple of dao, most of them (except the da-dao) are discontinued. If I am not mistaken, cold steel Chinese and Japanese blade are from Fred Chen forge and their blades are good but are beefier and does not handle as well compare to their historical counterparts (which is true with their CS gim, but a decent sword nonetheless).
If you could show us a picture of the dao you are interested, it would help a little.

I had a representative of Huanuo Forge tell me they made the blades for Cold Steel's Chinese weapons, but that the CS offering represented the bottom of the barrel, so to speak, of what Huanuo makes. That being said we do have a few forumites who will swear by the cutting power of the CS Gim. That being said, CS Daos apart from the Da Dao have all been discontinued. I would contact Jin-Shi about getting one made, his customs start around the $300 US mark.

I picked up Cold Steel Willow leaf dao from their parking lot sale couple of years ago for $36 .It was one of those dao that featured in thier proof video so I assumed it had been stab through a few car hood , cinder block, slab of meat, cow skull, pig head , pig body , cow rib , boots , copper pipe, tatami mat ,block of ice, trash can , steel drum etc. It still very sharp (cut my fingers twice with it)and I really have fun cutting bottle with it . So it is indeed strong, durable and last longer just like what they said in the DVD but handlingwise I would think it is a bit too front heavy and not quite balance . Since this one and its bigger sister (Bagua dao ) had been discontinue by Cold steel , you will have to pay hefty collector price for them . Jin Shi can make a very nice Dao for $300 like Liam mentioned.

I have this dao. This sword is bad ass! If the Cold Steel's blades are Huanuo Forge bottom of the barrel, then their blades are awesome.
My sword is tough, I would take it into battle with out a worry of it failing me. I have cut very heavy targets with it and it there is a new hard target that I never cut before, my dao is the first sword I use on it.
Cold steel calls it Willow leaf, but it's not, it's an ox tail. And it is balanced nicely for an ox tail dao, I have seen some other daos that are more tip heavy. It's POB is about the same as an Huanuo.

I've got both sices, also the 1 2/2 hands bagua version, both are just great and I wouldn't give them away easily.
Jin Shi products seam great, too, but the miaodao looked a bit wobbly?

I wish I could get a hold of a few of those Cold Steel dao.
Admittedly, it's mostly feelings of brand loyalty, I really like their jian.

Cold steel has parking lot sale every May so you can pick up factory demo for under $100 . The last time I went there was in 2009 and they still had some Bagua dao left . It just a heck of long drive from where you are is about 6 hours to 7 hours drive ?

Hopefully they'll have some left.

It's a shame Cold Steel discontinued their dao since most quality dao have to either be custom made or really expensive. To my knowledge, there are only 7 production dao of any worth, and only two of them are under 300$: the Hanwei Practical Dao (Kung Fu Sword, as they call it) and the Kris Cutlery Dao IV. As for the rest, there's the Kris Cutlery Folded Dao (399.95$ on Kult of Athena), the Hanwei Song Sword (999.95$ on KoA), and of course, the new Dynasty Forge Chinese line, which offers two liuyedao, one in Fangshi (Square Fittings) and one in Yuanshi (Round Fittings), both at 419.95$ on KoA, as well as a niuweidao (the common Chinese Broadsword) for 449.95$ on KoA.
With that in mind, it'd be really nice if Cold Steel brought their dao back into production. If it's priced the same as their original gim, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to make them fast enough.
