Let's see avoid ARMA but get a hold of Schola Saint George ( www.scholasaintgeorge.org/ ) for Historical European Martial Arts. SCA light and Heavy has been brought up, and then there's the Traditional Chinese Sword League ( swordleague.com/ ) which hosts full contact tournaments in the Chinese Style. Scott Rodell of the Great River Taoist Center is a good one to talk to about Chinese swordsmanship - he's the going authority on the topic in the US it seems. There are all our custom makers who could be interviewed: Tinker, John Lundemo, Brendan Olszowy, Jeffery Robinson, and Chris Palmer. More attention could be brought to non Japanese martial traditions. There's tons of material here. P.S. Slayer, I always forget how young you are, I keep thinking you're college age when I talk to you.

^Good points! Why do you suggest avoiding ARMA, though? I mean, I know they can be a bit... sword-snobby, at times, for lack of a better term, but don't they know thier stuff? Thanks for the compliment, Liam. ;D I'll get there eventually, I suppose, but right now I'm stuck in this virtual hell hole called High School... the funny thing is, I almost like it. (Don't tell anyone! ) I have to say, though, I NEVER forget who I'm talking to when I deal with you! The great and powerful COMBAT HIPPIE!!! I do love that shirt. -Slayer

Oh well, as for suggestions, as people said about hollywood crap, keep it out and even maybe show how it's false. Honestly, it would be good to talk to talk to a qualified sensei- here in Toronto I'm fortunate to have a fantastic Katori Shinto Ryu sensei, and he's trained in the artform of the Ryu, and thus always shakes his head at Hollywood and doesn't know much about things like the "sword market" because he's trying to keep the art alive. Oh, and stay away from Angel Sword. I don't know if anyone's said that yet, but he's been on a History Channel special before and.... sorry I know it's a can o' worms, I just roll my eyes at the guy and his outlandish prices and claims. Ah well. At the very least, you'll save money better spent on accurate or good weapons. Finally, needs more time with the re-enactors! I find on a lot of these shows we get too much time with "experts" (like the YAAATCH guy with the liquid katana oozing from his manly pores : who know either next to nothing or simply are there for display, as opposed to learning interesting historical facts from re-enactors, who aside from being interesting people are motivated experts in their fields! Seriously, I'd much more listen to a re-enactor talk for 2 minutes about something rather than watch some dude do fancy tricks......

As for ARMA - they do know what they are doing and what they are talking about, but after seeing the vid of John Clements breaking that Del Tin on a tree and then proceeding to continue trying to cut with it - I've been a bit leery about their view on safe training practices.

I would have to find it again. I saw it the first time because somebody had posted it here at SBG. I might have a chance look for it over the holiday weekend. (Happy Gunpoint Land Acquisition Day folks.)

www.thearma.org/John and others involved are not unfamiliar in the History Channel circuit. There are lots of videos and commentary about cutting and arms available in the feature section and videos. I'm sure many of them avoid SBG, just as some fans here tend to avoid other venues and understanding.

What makes someone a warrior?

OUCH! I HATE it when people come up with intellectual questions I can't answer. +1 for the good idea, Joeandmich. Here's my initial take on it; a person can be trained to fight for 20 years, they can kill out of anger, they can kill out of self-defense, but they may still not be a warrior. Why? I think being a warrior comes down to a person's mindset. Someone who believes they CAN accomplish the impossible, some who is willing to take risks for their cause, be it personal or universal, or anywhere in between. A warrior is someone who not only can fight, but someone who knows WHEN and WHY to fight.... As for a LoTR analogy, I would not call orcs warriors, I'd call them brutes. I would, however, call Ringwraiths warriors, even though they may be evil, they have the majestic confidence that I feel defines a warrior. Most of all, though, warriors CANNOT be grouped into one large sum; each person's definition of warrior, as well as whether or not they are one themselves, is variable. I think that it will be incredibly dificult to pin down a description and be able to say "Yes, THIS is what makes a person a warrior. Anyone who falls outside of these parameters, is not one." That statement would be far from accurate, possibly even ludicrous, no matter the description given, at least in my opinion.... so, I'd advise you to present a very open ended idea of what makes someone a warrior, to lessen the liklihood of either A-being totally wrong, B-missing some obvious points, or C-getting ridiculed for whatever reason. I hope this helps, and I'll probably be back later with more ideas. I always think of more later, lol. -Slayer

A warrior.... My own short version of this concept is that the warrior is the one who truly knows when not to fight, and when to fight. A person whose best weapon is the 3 pounds on gray and white matter between their ears, rather than any weapon wielded by bodily strength. A warrior is a person who strives to embody the ideals of courage, loyalty, generosity, selfless service, wisdom, and compassion. The true warrior will never refuse the conflict, but they may not take it to a physical level. Many modern warriors were not fighters at all but people who embodied the ideals I have mentioned and worked for the good of humanity as a whole - people who have found a just cause and dedicated their lives to serving that cause.
Slayer, answers like you just gave are why many of us mistake you for being beyond your years, good job.
Swordmonger - Given the strongest traceable part of my heritage is Native American (Choctaw) "Gunpoint Land Acquisition Day" is my own nickname for many American National Holidays - mostly I use it for July 4th and Thanksgiving.
