I am in the process of developing a documentary for the History Channel concerning American warrior subcultures such as SCA, reenactment groups and weapon based martial arts. Could you folks let me know what you would like to see in this documentary?
Thanks

Wow! That's awesome.... I think I speak for everyone here when I say my #1 request is NO HOLLYWOOD CRAP! lol. Seriously, keep it real, detail the truth about these organizations and interests, and it'll be a hit. I know I'll watch it... Cutting demos from some trained Iaidokas and euro guys like Shootermike would be great tool; show just what a weapon can actually do, just how effective a warrior is, and maybe even branch out into the explanation of why these combat arts arent' entirely obsolete; you know, like how a guy with a knife vs a guy with a 9mm at 15 feet distance from each other, the knife is more deadly? IDK, that could be a cool twist, methinks. Anyway, that's my first impression, but I'll let you know if I come up with anything else. Best of luck! ;D -Slayer

Aside from the regular SCA stick fighting you might want to check out their archery competitions (target and clout shoots) and archery battle tactics.
Not really a re-enactment but CAS (Cowboy Action Shooting) is fairly big in some areas.
There are interstate jousting and mounted archery competitions.
Some of the re-enacting that deals with cannon firing, traditional tomahawk and knife fighting, knife and axe throwing.
Of course all the swords, dagger and pole arm groups need to be covered.
Just some off the top of my head.

Oh, and mention the online groups like SBG, Myarmoury, SFI, etc! Show people that there IS a dedicated group of individuals who are attracted to the subject for one reason or another... Besides, it might bring us some new friends. Just a thought. ;D -Slayer

It's already been stated, but to reiterate: Make sure you get historical western/ European sword arts in there. Personally, I believe they're pretty underrepresented in the martial arts world.

I've seen some "samurai descendants" who's sword training stops right before...well...actual training. Best of luck with this venture! I like the fact that you're asking the communities involved in these things and not just some producer who likes movies.

Aside from the regular SCA stick fighting you might want to check out their archery competitions (target and clout shoots) and archery battle tactics. And also SCA light fencing. The heavies get all the attention, but rapier and cut & thrust are just as interesting, IMHO. I second this.

Get GOOD and historically accurate swords for the series, i.e Albion, Tinkers or Arms and Armor. NO DSA, windlass or hanwei fantasy crap.

Don't forget Odins and other customs. I agree, though; good weapons=good stuff. You could even do something on the big airsoft/paintball groups out there, as well as stage combat with medieval weapons. I happen to know that there's a restuarant somewhere between Tallahassee, Fl, and Orlando, Fl that sports jousting, sparring, and other medieval combat as entertainment while the diners, well, dine. Maybe check out some atractions like that? It shows how the love of the medieval era extends even to common day businesses like food. Note that what the billboards advertise is VERY unrealistic combat, lol, but still.... it's the thought that counts? -Slayer

In fact it might do well to show how hollywood fighting is incorrect and just makes for good tv, where as true fighting is just a no frills method of killing. Especially many western style arts. Archery tournaments might show well, and axe competitions as too. A lot of Highland games out there now, and there's always old west style rendevouzs that has a lot of competitions.

Hi there,
First off, thank you for considering our input! That alone shows a unique and evolved approach to the topics discussed. It's probably obvious, but I think everyone would LOVE to see a show about the explosion in "backyard cutting." Highlighting a group like our own UBC-United Backyard Cutters would be fantastic. Just take a look at the YouTube videos and how many hits they have; there is definitely interest there. It has evolved out of dozens of Eastern and Western Sword Arts into it's own identifiable hobby/pursuit. This isn't just a bunch of 15 year old boys being stupid. The hobby is taken very seriously and SAFETY is the primary concern. There are groups that meet all around the country and UBC's own "virtual" Moyoushi even has industry sponsors. This is a big deal and a heck of a lot of fun and I bet there are millions who would be fascinated by a program about it. Sorry to be so long-winded. Thank you again for seeking our input. I know we'll all do what we can to help make this a success for you and for the blade community.

Hey! I resemble that remark! ;D LOL... actually, I'd like to say that I'm not stupid with weapons in the least, though some would disagree. The point is, that's funny! 16 next month, though. +1 for a good luagh, as well as a good point. The number of 15 year old's I'd trust with a sword numbers at 2, me and my girlfriend. I'm sure there are more... I just haven't met 'em! -Slayer [Fixed quote]

Actually, I forget that you are younger. You are well spoken, humble and polite. These are not the first character traits that come to mind when someone mentions teens to me. You are an excellent role model for other young people regarding the safe way to enjoy this hobby. I honestly apologize if it came across AT ALL like a jab at you. It WASN'T! I am proud to have you as a comrade and fellow guardian of the light! ~wp

Aww.... Now I feel all warm and fuzzy! Nah, don't worry, man, I didn't think you meant it like that at all. Heck, even *I* avoid my age group.... I like hanging with college guys (the GOOD ones) or full fledged adults. That's one of the reasons I love SBG; I get to converse with people who are intellectually equal (or in many cases, superior) to me, as well as mature and thoughtful. Yourself included in the above statement. So, thanks for your concern, friend, though it's not required. ;D We're all good. I'm actually sorry if MY post came across in a way that made you think that YOUR post came across as... oh, heck, I'll just shut up now. Seriously, I intended the insertation of 'resemble' in place of 'resent' as well as the smiley to dissuade such possible misconceptions, but then right after *I* hit send, I thought the same thing you did but in reverse! Now this is just going to keep me laughing all day.... one more reason to love SBG, you know? Just like having dinner AND a show. +1 to you for your natural awesomeness. ;D -Slayer (who happens to be in the process of reloaded his karma cannon, so it'll have to wait a moment. )
