So I went to sharpen some swords today and I noticed that I can't get the leather strop to get tight enough on my belt sander from Harbor Frieght. The other belts get tight enough, but it seems that the leather has stretched.
So I got to thinking. If it's leather, couldn't I just put some water on it, let it sit on the loosest setting to shrink back down to size?
Or would this be a bad idea? I'm not sure about the glue that holds the leather together. I suppose I could always dampen all the areas except the joint.
Thoughts?

If you just want to strop our blade, take the belt off, turn it inside out and put it back on. Try it now! The inside diameter is smaller than the outside so when you reverse it, it should take up the slack and allow it to work properly.

Ah, good to know Demon!
As an update tho, I did moisten all but the seem of the strop and left it out in the sun in a relaxed circle. The belt, expectedly, tightened back up so that I can again have a semi taunt strop rather then the loosey goosey one I had before.
Oh, and whats the difference between using the rough side and the smooth side of a strop?

Do not leave the leather belt on the grinder when you are finished with it. Remove it and set it aside.
May prevent it from stretching under tension while sitting.

+1 Greg. I never would have thought of getting the belt wet and if I had thought of it I would have thought "No way, man, that's too crazy to work, you're going to have to shell out the dough for a new belt."

Yeah, after is becoming loose the first time, I've now made it a point to take it off the machine after I'm done with it. It was an easy enough fix, but the easiest fix is not to break it in the first place.
