Hey guys, I am trying a new hilt wrap decoration and I'm not sure if I like it or not. I am also not sure of the color schemes either. So I thought I would post some pictures and ask for feedback. The two swords pictured below are an Angus Trim hand-and-a-half and a Generation 2 Ranger. I have wrapped the hilts in a tight wrap of dark colored leather lace, then added a cross over-pattern of saddle tan leather lace. On the Ranger sword the bottom layer is shiny black and the X's are saddle tan Click to see large imagesOn the ATrim sword the bottom layer is burgundy and the X's are saddle tan Click to see large imagesPlease give feedback about whether you think this is attractive or not. Also, if you like the pattern please give suggestions about alternate color schemes. Thanks for your help.

I like both wraps. However, my problem isn't with the wrap it's with the pommel. That at's pommel doesn't match the rest of the sword, but not much you can do about that . Job well done!

Hello Shootermike,
I like the idea of the mixed colors but "to me" & this is just personal taste, the tan leather looks a little to thin so sort of just floats on top & looks out of place. Maybe if you used a wider strip it would suit the look a little better or some how could find a way to incorporate it into the black leather on the same level rather that over the top of it you might come up with something your happy with. Just a few thoughts, keep up the good work.
Cant wait to see the final look.

Rammstein, That pommel doesn't even fit the sword very well. I'm sure you are right. Which pommel should it have? Spud, That's good input. Duly noted and likely incorporated somehow. Thanks.

The wraps look gorgeous, but I never liked tan. A good deep Blue, even with a tiny hint of green is a great color to go with black, especially as a minor 'trimming' as you've done with that tan.
The pommel on the ATrim doesn't bug me so much as the cross on the Ranger. Seriously it's the only thing that keeps me from buying that sword is how thick the cross is. It just makes the whole thing seeml 'flat', like it used to be thicker, but then got squished in a vice like play-dough.

Did you notice that I've ground about a quarter inch from each side of the cross on this one? I still have a bit to go to get to where I want it. A little inside info. Clyde and I discussed it back when I wrote the review and he focused on it immediately as an area for change. A new Ranger prototype will soon be in with a narrower cross. Great minds think alike!

I really like what you did mike,
might I suggest maybe another cross section (or "x" currently has 5 maybe push it to 6 ) on the hilt with a bit thicker leather.
Then I think you'd really have something special..
Kudos to you though great job

shootermike, I'd say a fishtail would look good as well as even a VERY plain wheel pommel.

Adam got me thinking about less contrast. I really hate the shiny black, so I went out to the garage/shop and did a complete re-wrap on the Ranger. I don't have any blue or green die. So the base layer is medium brown. Then I tried tighter, closer Xs (thanks Justin) done in non-shiny black. This is not a great picture. There's actually a bit more contrast than it appears here. I will try to replace this photo in a day or two with a good daylight shot. Thoughts?

that looks great
do the closer Xs give a bit more "feel" to the grip due to finger placement, using the top of the Xs as a ridge?
does it provide more control?
I ask because we are making cosmetic suggestions, but what are the changes doing to the sword from a wielders point of view

To tell the truth, I was just wrapping these for cosmetics first. I haven't glued any of the wraps down yet. They are just wrapped and tucked. I figured I would wait until I had the aesthetic thing down before gluing it permanently and trying it out for some cutting and pell training.
But based on the very little dry handling I've done, I'd say the smaller, tighter Xs handle a little better. Though there really doesn't seem to be very much difference.

The revamp looks a lot better but at the end of the day (after all the feed back) you really have to be happy with the look & feel, its your baby so continue until your 100% satisfied (then like the rest of us, something will inspire you to start all over again).
Good luck & please keep up the good work & keep us all up to date.

Thoughts? great wrap on the ranger, it looks like it stepped out of middle earth. can you write a tutorial on how to wrap a handle this way it looks like it might be an easy and affordable way to upgrade a medieval sword
