Hey there! I'm going to be making a scabbard for my Albion Ritter when it arrives. This will be the first scabbard that I've ever made before and I'd like it to be a success rather than scraps of wood and leather. I would like advice on what materials to use and how to go about creating this work. I know that it must be a wood core (poplar, I believe) with a leather covering. But what type of leather? And then, what about the "fancies' like a triangle flap, a chape, and some simple belt suspension. And I'd like an integral belt as well. I'm hoping that, if I get enough good advice for this, This thread can be used as a good starting off point for others to make their own scabbards. That way they don't have to really start from scratch like I kind of have to do. Its always nice to help people Thanks for any and all advice and recommendations!

I've been thinking about this too, since I bought 2 swords without decent scabbards. Greyson Brown did a couple of detailed posts on this topic on myArmoury at www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=7922&highlight=making+scabbard. If the link doesn't work for some reason, the article is at Forum Index > Historical Arms Talk > Greyson Brown's Projects. I think this was his second scabbard. there's a link in the second paragraph to what I think is his first scabbard. And I know there's another, more detailed post he did, that went into more detail. but I couldn't find it. The results look good. But it looks like a lot of work. If you decide to take this route, would you please give us the "play-by-play" so the rest of us can see how hard it turns out to be?

of course, I'd be glad to post updates. Won't be for another 2 months though. Sword still needs to arrive for measurments.
I was hoping to get supplies out of the way first so I could start working on it as soon as it comes out of the box.

I'd also appreciate input from Clyde from G2 because I know that some of the scabbards for G2 swords have wooden cores.

Rammstein The scabbard for my Deltin is actually just 10 oz leather cut a little bigger than the width of the sword. I then cut some 1/4 in leather strips to go around the outside edges and sewed it togeather. As for all the decorations I got them from the Tandy leather store that was around me (it just closed last week).Get a Tandy leather catalog or check online www.tandyleatherfactory.com/ and you can order all sorts of things. I bought a bunch of conchos and cut off the screw backs with my Dremmel, they make great decorations. I dont have a picture handy but for my Jody samson leafblade sword I went to Museum replicas website and looked under the Kingdom of heaven swords scabbards, found one that would fit by checking the sword size and for $120.00 bought the scabbard of Odo. it's heavywood covered with nice leather comes with the belt suspension for probrably less money than you will pay for materials. www.museumreplicas.com/webstore/Home.aspx

Hi Rammstein, I stumbled upon the following sites when searching for scabbards.. Their prices sounds reasonable & their products catalogs seems great, though I had not buy from them yet... For your reference, pls : www.tritonworks.com/maelstrom

tritonworks is an awesome company and russ ellis is a great person. If my scabbard fails, I'm going to him!

To pass the time of this wait for my sword, I've designed a rough sketch on paint as to how the finished scabbard will look. Hopefully I can find white leather:

Wow! I remember seeing that thread from myArmoury. An oldy but a goody. It looks quite interesting, but it seems like a fairly daunting task that I know my current skills are not up to. Keep us posted.

I;ve never done this before either, so I have no idea whether or not I'm up for the task. I'd have to say the hardest part is going to be carving the poplar core. But that's not expensive and I can easily start over. Since the sword is due to arrive this thrusday (yaaaaay!) I'm going to start gathering once I have a bit of time to play around with it. No sense in starting just yet Any advice on carving the wood core is appreciated.

I have absolutely no advice on where to gather your materials in singapore... ;D
Closest I've even been was china, which was a couple of years ago. As always, thank you for your encouragement larry, it is deeply appreciated (gosh, how many times have I used that word in this thread ;D ) and I thank you.

something I'm going to need people's help on:
Does anyone know any scabbard suspensions other than the only present on my pictures above? I'd like to see what would look best before I start.
By the way, work has started in the way of gathering tools and supplies that I'll need.

This is an "official request" for Rammstein to hurry up and become a scabbard-making expert. I just got in line with Russ Ellis at Tritonworks and the wait is at least 12 months before he will be starting on my scabbards.
Obviously, there is more demand than capacity in this market. If you get busy, you might make some big bucks.

ha ;D I'd be more than happy to make scabbards for people, providing my work is good. Since I'm really pretty new at this, the only cost that anyone will have to pay would be for the materials and a little bit for labor. Providing I decide to start a business of course
