I recently got a Cheness Shura off the classified. The sword had been re-mounted and had a good tsuka. I have owned Hanwei, DF, Musashi etc, but never a cheness. I know they put their money in the blades but since this had been upgraded I had no qualms getting it. I received the sword and it is great condition. I bought this as a durable mat and occasional bamboo cutter. Problem is the edge. All the Hanwei, DF etc have been paper cutting sharp. My shura wont pass the paper cut test. If I stab the paper first, it will cut thru, but a staight draw cut fails, bending the paper. It just plain doesn't feel sharp as I am used to .... I can definitely feel the appleseed edge polished in there, but I am worried it wont cut mats. Now I have read that some swords wont necessarily feel sharp, but will still cut as intended. I just haven't before had a sword that didnt pass the paper test. Am I just worried for nothing ?

You know, sharpness can be funny sometimes. My longsword always has trouble with the paper test, and almost always fails just like yours. But it will still pop hairs, and sails through the lightest of papery cardboard boxes that I slice with it. Really, the only way to know if it's sharp enough for its intended target is to try it on the said targets. If it seems like it's having trouble, then it's time to refine the edge a bit more. But if it cuts them, then leave it alone and don't tire the blade with needless sharpening.

my kris cutlery blade doesn't cut paper easily, in fact it has big difficulties with cutting paper, but it feels sharp. it sounds silly, but I'm sure that it is very sharp, it just doesn't "want" to cut paper (maybe it is shy? ;D)

none of my KC's do well with paper but that doesn't mean they don't cut well. I believe that it has to do with the appleseed edge geometry on these blades. there also seems to be a decent amount of niku through the lower half of the blade tapering to a very slight niku within the last 10-12" from the tip. take a look at some of the pics from my last bottle battle. the ones of me are with the 29A, my friend was using the paper cutting Munetoshi. wiwingtiswordsupply.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=112&page=9

The niku on all Cheness blades makes them seem not as sharp as other sword and they don't pass the paper test well either but they do cut just fine. Cut a mat or anything and you'll see that the Shura's edge is perfectly fine. If the edge is in the condition is what when the first buyer got it, that is. It's possible that the edge got dull somehow but again, do some test cutting and you'll find out. Just don't sharpen the edge just because you THINK it's not sharp enough, you have to KNOW it so go and try it out.
