the seppa on the tsuka side actually startes denting into the concave part of the tsuba. so when you turn it around it should fit tighter. is this what happened? i'd probably recomend getting a thicker seppa, flipping it around like that would most likely make it weaker and eventually start breaking. i wrapped my tsuba with a cloth so it was somewhat thick (i don't have a rubber mallet). then took a small sized hammer and lightly tapped it on each side till it came off. i held the blade buy the dull side with another thick cloth. patience is a virtue!

I haven't removed the tsuka on my Kaze entirely. I did tap at it a little just to see how much work it would require. I notice my seppa cup a little. I will have to be sure to flip it around when I do finally remove it to keep it from rattling.

Finally got the tsuka off and flipped one of the seppa around. When I put it back on the rattling ceased. ;D That's kinda freaky, but cool. ;D What method did you finally use to remove the tsuka? Pretty much the same method as lewisimaging did (I dont have a rubber mallet either) I had the sword for five months before it started to rattle and I had done some cutting (plastic bottles only so far) but not much. and yes I noticed the seppa was cupped slightly when I examined it.

The upper mekugi was hard but not as hard as the bottom one which was destroyed just trying to take it out . Then there is the tsuka. As you know a shirasaya does not have a tsuba. So how am i going to remove the tsuka? Please help me!!

Place the small end against the shirasaya tsuka, preferably against the spine or mune of the blade where it meets the tsuka, and tap lightly on the wider end of the wedge with a hammer(preferably a rubber mallet) until it comes off.

Thanks. That actually worked to my somewhat suprise. Another question. I have a 15 3/4" tsuka that i would like to mount on my DH shirasaya. The problem: The DH shirasaya tang has a little curve and the tsuka that i would like to use doesn't really have a curve. Is it wise to steam the tsuka then bend it? Or just use epoxy to reinforce the tsuka? (There isn't ito or same' on it yet but a fuchi.)
