O.K. I will now answer the "leaf spring question" once and for all I contacted EATON DETROIT one of the largest and most reputable spring manufactures in the country www.eatonsprings.com/ and asked this question
according to your "spring tech 101" your leaf springs are made exclusively from S.A.E. 5160 and are made to original factory blueprints
my question is were all original factory springs made from S.A.E. 5160? and if not what were they made from? thanks
and received this answer
SAE 5160 has been used to make springs from the late mid 30's and all springs from the early 50's and up are made from SAE 5160. Various grades of steel was used prior to the advent of 5160. Cheap, inexpensive springs and a lot of imported springs are made from 1065 or 6150 or 9250, all of which make for very low quality but cheap spring. The main advantage of 5160 vs all other spring steel is the life span of the spring. Springs made form 5160 will outlast and out perform springs made for the other materials.
so there you have it folks straight from the horses mouth

Houghton International Quench Documentation PDF File
Hey Dan, I thought you might want to make this download a sticky. I'd probably consider this a must read for anyone interested in being anything more than just a one time bladesmith. It's 76 pages, and the information in page 1-10 alone will cut the learning curve of a new smith by some months at minimum, but the whole thing is incredibly helpful and utterly fascinating in my opinion.
I'd seen this before but had forgotten about it over the last months. Happening upon the link again...I thought it would be a great thing to share.
