I come seeking some advice on purchasing a helmet. The Frazier International History Museum in Louisville, Kentucky has an exhibit from the Royal Armouries and I'm going down in a few days to check it out. In their gift shop, they have replicas, one of which is a nasal helmet I'm thinking about purchasing. My question is, how quality is 18 g. mild steel? I figure a heavier guage is probably used in actual functional pieces and better quality replicas, but I'm wondering how far off this is going to be from that. The piece is only $55 dollars, so I'm not expecting much but I wonder if it's good enough a display piece or not. Here's a link of the piece I'm referring to: shop.fraziermuseum.org/itemdetail.asp?productid=445

Looks like a GDFB replica, good helmet I bet.

At 18 gauge, it's highly unlikely to be a GDFB replica. However, I have a helmet that looks exactly like that that I picked up on eBay (Von Sussen) a few years ago. It was also listed as 18 gauge, but is actually a little thicker, like 17 or 16, at least in some parts. I wouldn't use it for full-on contact unless I had to, but it's sturdier than an 18 gauge Viking helm my brother picked up from BudK.
As an aside, this type of helmet is generally called a Wenceslas helmet, named After Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia in the 10th century. $55 is a decent price for it, and as a costume piece it's pretty good. Mine is a little big for me, but I have a relatively small head.
Hope that helps, Alan

Good information. Yeah, it looks like most of the GDFB stuff is around 16 gauge, actually. Good the hear it might be worth the money. I'm not exactly sure if I'm getting it but this reassures me a little. Thanks, everyone!

16Gg is pretty common in the SCA these days for helms. Gets more common the farther you get from Atlantia.

Wow, some of those are really nice and not priced too badly, too. I almost never check out their moat page. Well, I leave tomorrow for Louisville. I'll let you guys know if I got the helm or not and share some pics if I do!

Well, after all that, I decided not to get the helmet. After seeing all of the historical examples, which were truly awesome, this just didn't have the appeal to me that I thought it would. So I just let with a lousy t-shirt. It was a very nice museum, though, so if anyone wants to visit, I'd highly recommend it.
