Anyone know how well ringmesh stands up to damage? From what i have read on the site, it is for real protection.

Watch the Katar demonstration on Spike.com. Might make you think again. Top of the line or not. I would hate to eat one of those in the gut.

Has anyone done any durability tests? For Ringmesh or otherwise?

About solidity: The riveted mail from Icefalcon is popular among SCA fighters on the Armour Archive, so I would believe it is quite solid...as would be the one from GDFB (although I read it's sometime victim of a spotty quality control...a rivet too close to the side of the ring will pop more easily...). A member on MyArmoury did tests with different weapons on mail once, it should pop up if you search for it on their forum... About historicity: As far as I know, European historical mail was made of riveted or, often, of riveted and solid (stamped from sheet metal or welded) rings. Again from the top of my head, up to the middle-ages, was made of riveted round rings, then became made of flat rings with dome-shaped rivets (around end 13th-14th c. IIRC), wedge rivets were mostly seen in Germanic places...if my memory serves me well, it goes something like this. About ring sizes: there are many historical examples with many different ring sizes, 6-9 mm diam. is not too far fetched for average I think. Although I believe the rings from ringmesh are quite small...but from a historical point of view maybe not unheard of...apart from the all welded part, of course... For more info look here: www.myarmoury.com/feature_mail.htmland here: forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/Hope all this helps a bit in your quest... Cheers and please post pics of your mail when you get it! Reflingar edited to add: I believe you will almost always have to tailor it a bit for perfect fit...loose rings and rivets can be purchased form both IceFalcon and a GDFB supplier...historical patterns and how-to's are to be found on Armour Archive also...
