I have searched high and low for what is needed to build a proper, historically accurate setup. (minus armor, that comes later) Everything to type of chain-mail , footwear, tunics ext.....

What years were you thinking about, because you have a time period of about two hundred years and changing Armor, what they were waring from the start two what they had on in the end was dif enough to notice...SanMarc.

Sword: Oakeshott Type X, XI, or XII Armor: maille hauberk, with maille chausses, gauntlets, and coif with aventail. Helm would be a nasal-type for that period for the most part, although you could go with perhaps an early great helm. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB0351&name=Crusader+Flat+Top+HelmetShield: early kite shield with steel boss. Clothing: tunic, braies, leggings, surcoat, and cloak. Shoes: low ankle boots. It's a simple look, not too expensive to achieve. Like this (the sword is incorrect, but the rest is spot on for the 3rd Crusade time-period. Helm is a little later, but could still fit.):

Also, here is a pic of what i a trying to go for. The hard part is to get the custom made helm. Any suggestions on where i can get that done?

If I were you, I'd buy a on-the-market great helm and make the crest myself. I know crests like that were used, though I'm not sure how many survive (if any) or what all they were made of. If you have enough money to think of a custom helmet, you could certianly make a crest yourself for cheap. If you want to look like the statue, you could get everything low priced at Kult of Athena, except the kite shield and helmet crest. They have this, though you'd have to paint it... www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH6757&name=Medieval+Wooden+Shield

The way I understood it a Surcoat was what was worn over armour, while a tunic was a shirt and a tabbard was a form of coat. I know tunic is a very broad term for many diffirent time periods. I think what you want is called a Surcoat, though people also seem to call it tunic/tabbard, despite them being diffirent things.

The little statue is based on figures drawn in the early 1300s, which falls a bit after the Third Crusade. I think around the time of the Teutonic saking of Danzig in 1308ish - just for a little historical information there. On the other hand, I'd buy a GDFB helm and customize it myself - mirroring the other comments here. It would not be that hard to do. I'd get a couple of these: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH6101&name=Roman+Crest+%2D+RedThen just cut them down a little, dye the horsehair black with leather dye, and figure out a way to mount them securely to the sides of the helmet. The look would be the same.

some one please tell me the difference between a tunic, tabbard and surcoat beacuse many different sites show them to be the same thing. that or i'm missing something The tunic is your general "long shirt" if you will... they were worn UNDER the armor. The tabbard is sort of like a surcoat, but it's got some padding in in and it's generally shorter than a surcoat. This one, however, IS worn over the armor. The surcoat is a piece of cloth (depends on the type whether it has just a hole for the head or if it has places for your arms too) that generally crusaders wore over their armor (for identification purposes as well as so they wouldn't come to direct contact with their chain maille on a hot day, cause it sometimes got really hot (from the outside that is, because they wore padding under their chain mallie)) Edit: on the little figure that you attached above you can see the tunic under his maille if you look at the split in between his leg where the maille ends (not that you were wondering, but that was done for horsemen so the maille would cover their legs when they were riding and not bother them, infantry usually used ones that were split on the sides). If you could bring someone from the past back though, I'd bet my head that there was padding under
