Oh what have I started. Between the two of you Ichiban and Gunblade I imagine some interesting things might get created from just talking about mekugi even! Thanks for the info about the brass mekugi, that makes a lot of sense. I had planned when I make a new tsuka to drop down to only one mekugi, and I do plan to fit the nakago like a glove. Would there be much of any reason though to keep two pegs?

He-he. Gunblade, it makes sense and COULD work, but being no expert I don't know for sure. Someone will maybe have other views to throw in, if you ask Dan Davis he may konw more. I assume it would be safe for light cutting. Ethienne, for a properly carved tsuka one peg is enough. In my tsuka there can be only one.

I know bro XD... I just want to know why the bamboo peg when you can have some other options too..
A bamboo peg simple enough have worked for centuries, i dont argue against that.
I never have tried to do anything custom except bikes, now with this new thing i feel very creative and have alot of ideas at once.....
But the problem is lot of ideas and i dont know how to start them lol XD...

Just go on and get those ideas into life, Gunblade. You learn as you go, and the learning curve is steep. Just remember: safety first.

I have used some things in diving known as "sex" bolts.
They have a "male" side and a "female" side and only go together so far. So I would think that with careful measurements you could get one that looks good and fits just right.
I good hardware guy could hook you up I would think.

I know bro XD... I just want to know why the bamboo peg when you can have some other options too.. Well that was the reason for this thread Gunblade. I had known bamboo and horn were used. I wanted to find out if there was other mekugi materials out there. If people had experience with some other stuff, and how it all measured up together. I don't have much actual interest in using anything other than bamboo unless as said earlier on if something much better was explained. Then I might switch but bamboo is relatively inexpensive easy to get and works great. This has been more about to learn more about these often forgotten little wonders of the sword. To learn if there is other choices that are not so often used. As for starting projects, well gather the tools and parts and get going. I am working on gathering parts for my plans, but will be a flurry of activity once I get them all.

The habaki is often referred to as the heart of the sword, so would mekugi be the kidneys or pancreas maybe?

Not bad, considering Swords of Might sells 10 pegs of $10 that is basicly the same price. I also like how this ebay vendor makes them quite long, so you can fit it right. Though it seems a bit more tapered than needed, but that may just be because you see more length so more taper. How well did these mekugi work for you Jason? I imagine they weren't bad since your suggesting them, but did they fit well? About how long are they? It seems he makes them oversized to be sure they will fit your mekugi-ana properly.

Well I ordered some of these mekugi pegs to see how well they work. Always good to have a few extra about incase they are needed anyways. ;D Thanks for the good tip for mekugi Jason. I had noticed the 10 pack of pegs from SOM has the feed back of: "Always good to have a few extra mekugi on hand. These are a uniform thickness that should be tapered before use, I shaved mine with a razor blade until they were just slightly larger than the old ones,as they will compress slightly during insertion. Placing a piece of chopstick over the end to take the force of pressure during inserting will keep the surface of the mekugi from damage. My brass mekugi hammer ate the old ones..bamboo on bamboo is much less damaging. Thanks Jason!""The mekugi arrived quickly, but they are much too big for my Katana. My sword was ordered from China through eBay. Anyhow, I've ordered an Odachi from SoM, I'll have to wait and see the differences between my sword and a SoM sword. Overall, excellent service!"Sounds like the SOM pegs were made a little large, probably so people can trim them down to fit. But I think I like the idea of pretapered pegs that you trim the length rather than fat pegs you have to taper.

I would like to know how they work out. I just ordered some of these: www.j-armory.com/LLmainten.htmYou'll have to scroll down to find them. He did not have any shipping in the US, so they are a little bit less. I'll let you all know how they work out.

Except the ebay ones were $1 each, $2 shipping +$0.10 each additional
