Not sure if this is posted in the correct forum or not. Figure mods can move it if it needs to be
Alright. Finally got around to working on a project I've had in mind for months. A portable, all-purpose cutting stand. Now bear in mind that this is a prototype, and I'm not finished yet. I'm still awaiting a shipment of very expensive hinges called "sewing machine hinges" to make the fold-up wide-base cutting boards. Also there will be little hollowed-out coves on one side of the main post (the side covered by the legs when everything is folded up together) to house the sharpened tatami dowel and the cutting-board dowel. I hope that once I'm done that I will be able to sell these at a reasonable rate to interested sword-lovers
All of the wood is made of cedar because I think it's a beautiful wood, smells wonderful, and it doesn't mind getting wet nor will it rot so I don't need to add a sealant to the stand. So anyways without further adieu, here are pictures of what I have so far!
The first picture is of the stand all compacted up and ready for traveling around! When I'm done there will also be a couple of colapseable cutting boards one 2x4x8 when folded and the other 2x4x24 when folded between the main post and the two legs on the right. When the cutting boards are unfolded and secured in place they will be 1x8x8 and 1x8x24 respectively.
A little closer view of the handle on the side. It's off center, but I couldn't center the balance because it would have interfered with the sectional capabilities of the stand. If someone orders one of these with only a 3' and 4' option instead of the 2', 3', and 4' like the prototype is, then the handle can be moved to the center balance point and be much more comfortable to carry. The handle is from an old speaker box I had out back.
A closeup of the strap system that keeps everything nice and tight when lugging it around.
Just after unlatching the straps that hold the legs against the post
A closeup of the notches cut into the center of the legs. this design allows a very tight fit between the two boards btw: Please forgive all the remaining pencil marks, remember this is just a prototpe.
The legs married together and awaiting the post.
A closeup of the grooves cut into the post. This took a bit of trial and error and you can see a pretty rough cut on the right side
And a nice snug fit. Pretty much no wobbling. I had intended on threading a long bolt through two sides for support, but as of now it doesn't need it. That opinion may chage as I wear it in.
The remainder of the pictures show the scale-down system. starting at 4' heigh, and working down to 3' and finally to 2' Whatever your cutting-height preference
Note that as the latches are undone the strap hangs low. this is intentional for getting the strap out of the way in an effort to prevent the strap from being accidentally cut from bad swings.
So whatcha think?
