Rapier fighting really helps my footwork and movement in rattan fighting.

This week I picked a video from the end of the night. We are both exhausted after 2 hours of fighting. I thought that the sword work might be more visible because we are a little slower. Around 3:05 you see me land two shots right in front of the camera. He felt safe because I was out of range. I then lunged forward and slapped down two. Mind you, this guy would normally beat me, he went into this fight more tired then me.

Tsafa, There are a ton of SCA folks over at www.armourarchive.org . Have you ever visited that forum? There is a subforum on combat and an "Ask Duke Paul (Bellatrix)" subforum.

I'm driving 5 hours upstate tomorrow for an East Coast tournament this Sat. I should be back Sunday night with some pictures and video.
It should be interesting. It is both a test of skill and endurance. Its a 3 hour Bear Pit. Winner stays in until he is dead. When he dies, winner takes his place. Fighters come in one after the other. You get three points for winning and one if you loose. So even if you know you are going up against a duke that you can't beat, you still take a point. It makes people keep fighting for 3 hours. You rest while you wait on line. There are 8 pits that move pretty fast. About 150 to 200 people are expected to compete.

I placed 44 among 147 fighters this weekend. I scored 73 points.
It is interesting to note big point spread among the fighter at the top. 1 had 377 points 2 had 281 points 3 had 261 4........240 5........237 6........226 7........205 8........202 9 through 33 had between 100 and 200 points 34 through 147 had zero to 100 points.
This shows how awesome the guys at the top are.
Here is some video of me fighting in the Tournament:
I would also like you all to take a look at this video:

No. I study the German system. What I am attempting to do is bind and thrust. If I can't thrust I duplier or try to hook with the crossguard and attack the other side. It's not so easy when your opponent is a competent fighter.

Hello Tsafa,
Long time no talk. Fighting bastard sword against sword and board is tough. One of the reasons I don't pick it up much as not many other people are doing it in my current location.
I did start using a small center grip round shield just for fun (very similar to the one used by your opponent above but a little larger). I have had a lot of fun with it. The pros is it allows you a lot more freedom of movement and I can actually generate more power with my hips not being encumbered with a strap on heater. The cons as you see in the video is the openness of the leg. I was just messing around when I picked it up about two weeks ago at fighter practice, but the comments after the fighting, "I don't know how you were making some of those blocks, you should fight with that more." Have lead me to continue using it. Oh yeah, and my reply was, "not really sure what I was doing I just didn't want to get hit."
Anyway, good to see the videos Tsafa. Have fun with the bastard sword.

I just saw the videos from Birka. I want to that event in 2004 and 2005! It was only 20 minutes north of my house. You know if I still lived in NH we could have easily hooked up for some fighting.

Hi Trueswordman. I am participating in a 3 on 3 meele competition this weekend. One of the men on the team has to have a two-handed weapon. My knight picked me as that person, so I had one month to train.
I have been training with longsword outside the SCA with WMA group, so am trying to implement those techniques. My primary problem I think is that my armor is not tweaked to fighting this style. Also that I am not use to fighting this style in armor. The sword is light enough at 3 lb 4oz, but my gauntlets weigh 3.5 lbs each. So between sword and and gauntlets I have about 10 lbs in my hands. I may pick up some aluminum gauntlets at Pensic, those should weigh about 1.5 lbs each. I am also thinking of going with all aluminum legs and arms. That should speed me up a bit.
Too bad I could not get to Gulf Wars this year, maybe I will see you next year.

I'm a total dunce on SCA fighting, but Tsafa is there a reason you don't use aluminium on your armour on the whole?

You can't for the head because the weight of the helmet is what keeps your head from getting knocked off. That pretty much just leaves the torso. A lot of people think going "all" aluminum is tackie. I'm still kind of open to the idea. Or my my just replace the leather pauldrons on my shoulders with aluminum ones. That will cut out some friction. I'm just not decided on that yet. I'll see that the offerings are at Pensic this year.

You can get aluminum that looks like steel especially if it is highly polished.
I know what you mean about fighting in vs. out of armor. It really slows you down. Try doing some cutting in your armor sometime. Not nearly as easy as jeans and a T-shirt.
I definitely want to do Gulf Wars again. I had a blast.

Well even if you do get aluminum to look nice, the less weight means less protection as well. And it will crack faily easily if you use large sheets of it. Well if you don't want to have the armor get in the way, there is going min armor. It's not so bad...the pain makes you learn not to get hit faster .

The other option is plastic gauntlets. In any case I am wearing padded street hockey gloves on the inside to absorb some of the shock. The gauntlets should also wrap completely around the hand so that they make contact with the sword handle. That way the force of the blow goes from the sword through the gantlet onto the stick.

One place you don't want to skimp out on though is the hands. A broken hand will put you out of commission for a long time.

Very true. Hand don't heal fast...and knee and elbows don't heal at all. Despite this, I find just heavy hockey gloves are enough when I don't use basket hilts.
