So I finally have a cutting stand now so I can defeat hordes of plastic bottles! Me and my dad took a trip to lowes earlier and bought the lumber and put it together using this design. www.tameshigiri.com/make_a_stand.htmlStill havent drilled a hole for my dowel yet since I wanted to get to test cut a few bottles, ill probably drill it tommrow since its getting dark out. Now I can do some reviews of all my swords and have a cutting section to review also (Didn't want to write any reviews with no cutting!)

Looks good! I myself am working out the kinks on my own "Portable" design. If it works like I'm thinking it's going to work I'll post instructions and even build them for people for a modest fee.

Great basic cutting stand! If I might suggest you to put a small maybe 10"x10" platform on top so that you can cut bigger bottles. Just a suggestion though.

One suggestion tho. If you are going to be cutting pool noodles and tatami on it, you might want to think about cutting it in half, drilling out a hole on both cuts and then wood gluing the rod in the bottom hole.
Your current design will work, but your noodles and tatami will be a bit high, if you cut it in half and allow a way for the top half to be secured back on top, you'll have a perfect multipurpose/multi-height cutting stand.
And that design is great. I used it for my first stand and it's still held up. The only other thing that I'd suggest is that if you plan on adding a top platform, to put some triangle supports underneath it. I screwed my top platform directly to the 4x4 and it has since fallen off from the vibrations and forces of cutting.
And if you really wanna go the extra mile, take some wood stain, like the kind you'd put on a deck, and put a coating of that on. It will make sure your stand never fails due to too much water exposure.

Thanks for the tips Greg, +1 for you. Thats a good idea to cut it inhalf and glue the dowel in the bottom half. It is a bit high upto my belly button and would probably be too high for pool noodles or tatami.

Thats the same design I made my stands... of multiple hights... including one with a flat top as Mogur sugests. Allthough I'm starting to like Tom's stand better, becasue I find the wood sticking out at the base gets in the way of footwork on this design.

Yeah I acctualy have enough wood left over to build another stand, but the rest of my 4x4 is shorter so I might just do that and keep 1 for tatami/pool noodles and one for bottles.
