I'm pretty sure that most of you have seen the anime "Princess mononoke" (mononoke hime). well it is my all time favorite anime and I really like the weapons they use in this movie, especially the sword that ashitaka has.
it looks like some very archaic kiriha zukuri type thing without guard and a ring on the handle. to me it is not a weapon, more like a machete or something like that but that guy ashitaka shure knew how to use it ;D.
so what do you think? would such a thing ever exist somewhere in japan? oh, and does anyone know if it is reproduced ( even if it is just a wall hanger, only thing I need from it to be as close to the movie, as it can get....)
thanks.

Love the anime... no idea about the swords historical precedence tho.

Wuuuuh, it's been a long time since I've watched that. Don't remember what the weapons were like. Can you find any good pics? Apparently I'm google image search retarded.

Looks kinda like a fusion between a Kiriha Zukuri and a Han Dynasty Jian or something. Or... uh... maybe a guard-less Han Dao? Kinda like this: www.jin-shi.com/pics/han_dao.jpg But with a shorter and wider blade. Don't want to hotlink offa Jin-Shi. Doubt he needs his bandwidth getting eaten up. ... I have no clue what that sword's supposed to be though.

I've been wondering about those, actually. I've spotted similar weapons in other Japanese media but I've never seen a real one.

Ouch Sam, but then again, I don't think many folks realize how much math is actually involved in designing, much less making a quality blade. That reminds me I need to PM you about something.
