I was going to order some black sageo from Sword n Armory for a customization job I'm planning on doing for a friend, when I noticed that they took orders for it by the foot. This is the first customization job I have done involving Sageo, and I was wondering how many feet I should order that would be required to make a standard knot such as this: I was thinking around 7 feet, but is that too much or too little?

I would say the simplest way to get a general measurement for sageo length is to measure your saya and double the number then round up to the nearest foot. ;D
That is of course a very general measurement but should work for a standard presentation knot like that one.
You may want a bit more length, depending on the knot you plan for the sageo and style of your custom job. For example, tachi style will need a much longer sageo.

Properly measured sageo should wrap 1 and 1/2 times around the waist of the intended wearer, plus 1 shaku (roughly 1 foot).
The particular knot in question is deliberately adjustable and will allow almost any properly measured length of sageo.
In fact, you can use yards of sageo and extend the knot all the way out to the kashira if you wanted (although why you would want to is beyond me...).

I ordered 11' sageo from sword & armory. Its a nylon (synthetic silk)- that TBH i don't like very much save the color. This length will cover all my bases for sword mounting styles, as well as provide me with a small rope in a jam. You can see how many loops there are in my 11' sageo in the photo below standard presentation knot.
