Lance, here is an additional idea to get people in a more defensive mode. When fighting a bear pit, use a point system where people earn 1 point when they hit someone, but loose 2 points when they are hit by someone. Of course, for a while the winner will be the person with the smallest negative number, but eventually people will catch on.

RSS - Realistic sparring shields? I sense a spark of creativity! I like the idea too. The problem with SCA shields is that they are too dangerous to bash people with. The corners and edges are particularly dangerous for bashing. I propose shields designed with safe bashing in mind. It will take some reasearch and development.

Yes, in fact most of my injuries in armoured combat were from my fingers colliding with an opponent's shield. The basket hilt guards often are not sufficient in protecting everything, sadly

Tsafa, I get what you mean. But then we'll have to have a book-keeper on the field for that. LOL. Better a nice looking lady, right? This past week we had someone using a basket hilt and a dagger in combination and it was very fatal to those who opposed him. I got dispatched in seconds upon contact.
