So I am curious if anyone has experience with Port Orford Cedar, which from what I understand is basically native USA grown relative of Hinoki. Are there any critical differences? Or are we here in the US being conned by the Japanese, who buy our lumber have it shipped to Japan, then sell it back to us as Hinoki. Interestingly, the U.S. government only allows this one type of wood to be exported as logs rather than as milled lumber and the Japanese consume over 85% of the U.S. supply. Kind of says something, like we are missing out on this good wood. "True hinoki is a cypress that grows only in Japan. In the United States, there grows a tree that's called Port Orford Cedar (POC). Grown only on the west coast, port orford cedar is not a true cypress, yet not really a cedar, the Japanese feel it is so close a cousin to their hinoke that they consider it a "religious' wood. The wood of both the hinoki and POC is a lemon-scented, light-colored wood with a rich, straight grain, and is highly rot resistant. "Many places I found Port Orford Ceder and hinoki being used interchangably, along with some other names like Port-Orford white-cedar, Oregon-cedar and Lawson cypress. So I ask this wood question because if Port-Orford-cedar is so close to hinoki then is it usable as a tsuka and saya wood? It would make getting a good quality wood to make tsuka and saya much easier in the US, and cheaper. Especially for me up in the Northwest where it is growing. ;D

Hinoki is another type of wood than honoki. Hinoki is a wood woth resin and oils, so it's not suitable for sword furniture. While hinoki is a tree in the cypress family, honoki is a magnolia related tree.
Alternative wood for honoki is white poplar and maple.

Ahh, thanks. Too bad my typo fingers messed up and sent me to the wrong wood. I would have been nice to have a local source for tsuka and saya wood.

Hmm, maybe it wasn't my typo fingers, it seems google likes to change the results for honoki into hinoki. Quite annoying.
