I recently picked up a book providing an illustrated history of swords and knives to help with my writing (wasn't sure how to arm my characters). It was very helpful but it eventually raised a question I had overlooked: what sort of armor best fits them?
With that question in mind I went looking for a similar book, an illustrated history of armor or something along those lines. I haven't had much luck. So can anyone recommend such a book? I'm looking for lots of photgraphs of various armor throughout history to provide me with visual references along with detailed information as to how effective/heavy/large each piece of armor was. Any help in this query would really be great.

There are plenty of books out there that try to convince the unwary that they are the definitive book on [fill in the blank]. None of them are.
If you're going pure fantasy, you can make it up as you go. If you want it to resemble a particular period of Earth history with persons that would fit in in various particular regions on Earth, then research those regions and that period and the equipment available. You'll learn more and have a better piece when you're done.

I'm not used to making up armor because I'm ignorant of terminology and the like. Also since I'm arming them with more or less real weapons I wanted to try to do something similar with their armor.

A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor: in All Countries and in All Times (Paperback) ~ George Cameron Stone This is an excellent book, check Amazon for a used one.

Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight has a second from me; it's a good book.
