sure, but aren't they a bit short for a yat? I don't really know much about Yataghans but I thought they were longer than 18-20" blades.

Tom:
That's the only hickey I've found so far.

Well, even if my brother doesn't like the TFW, I am liking that one blade of theirs (the one I showed on the previous page) more and more, and as I would like to to more camping over the next few years (while I'm young and not falling apart ) I would like a slick "machete" (if I can even call it that. ) to take with me on trips. So either way I will "borrow" my brothers blade and do a review on it. AFTER I give it to him! Bwahahahah, I 'borrow' my lil' bro's VA Malatesta quite often. Oh, the boons of being the eldest.... They make up for the rest of the crap you have to deal with. *Oh, and for that sale thang, I think the "Indonesian Parang" is the most attractive one. Probably because of that shmexy-ly carved scabbard. Personally, I still haven't been converted to the whole Indonesian/Phillipine/etc. weapons.

I thought I should respond more than simply saying, "Yeah, that's the hickey." And since I'm now a swordmaster, I can assure you I'm not just trying to pad my post count. (KC does the happy dance in his Hawaiian print kilt.) The sansibar and other TFW weapons are a touch (or two) short for what I think of when I think of a yataghan. Wiki (the source of all things good and true?) asserts a typical blade length of 60 to 80 cm. I'm metrically challenged but that seems to fall right into the European arming sword/single handed sword specs---26 to 30 inches, more or less. Still, recurved blades are mighty thin on the ground. I should point out that I don't have any pommel time---I suppose that's the swording equivalent of "trigger time" with guns----with a yat. As in so many fields, most of my knowledge and enthusiasm about yataghans is second hand. Given the relative inexpense of the TFW blades, it might make sense to go that route instead of jumping straight into a full-on custom. I could tell myself it is a "riding yataghan" instead of an "arming yataghan." Actually, the Wiki reports that janissaries and other infantry used shorter, lighter yataghans, so maybe instead of riding it would be a "walking yat." I'd thought about seeing if Chris from Scorpion Bows would do up a yataghan, and that remains an option. I think that his Asp sword, if reduced in blade width, could be squinted into a yat. This approach remains an option. Or---and this is an option too---I could just continue to sit and ponder on it, which is a grand way to waste, err, while away the time.

ya know the TFW guys do custom work for a very reasonable price. I bet they could make a wicked yat for a real deal of a price. talk to them and see what they can do. worst case you say "sorry that's a big beyond what I'm ready to pay but I'll keep in touch" and then maybe you never talk to them again or maybe you do, who cares.

Ahhh but I am the 'lil' Bro in this case. 4 years younger! But we are cool about it now. I have yet to get the chance to show him any of the pictures yet. but the more and more I look at that TPW one, the more I keep thinking of that "1" empty spot in my collection (1 meaning, my next "one" ;D )
