Who can tell me the best place on the internet (cheapest, most reliable, best customer service, or any other criteria) to order tatami mats for cutting?
Also, any info. on things I need to know, or any other help or advice would be appreciated.

I am suprised that every sword retailer does not offer them and market them aggresivly. You would think that would be the first thing they try to push after a sword sale.

i've been trying to find a good place to buy tatami mats, but i've not found any with reasonable shipping costs. the shipping cost from tameshigiri.com is around $450 for one box of tatami, thats just insane, so i think i'll keep looking for other places instead...

Thanks Razor and Slash. I am determined to get some. And it will probably be from one of the places you listed. Thanks again.

So far, Bugei has worked out to be the cheapest including the shipping. I can get 20 mats from them for just over $5 each including shipping.

Has anyone used soaked straw tied off in bundles for tameshigiri?
I have seen footage of Fumon Tanaka and his school using such targets but I imagine that they're also using pretty sharp swords!
Soaked straw seems like a cheap alternative to bamboo mats... sorry if this is too far off topic.

Hello vyapada, I use beach mats all the time as they are a tenth of the cost of tatami and work really well. They are a bit thinner but i find that 3 mats make a good target and i just treat them the same by soaking for about 24hrs before use.I have tried straw but the biggest problem here in the uk is that it is cut too short,i did try wrapping it in a plastic sack and then tying but to be honest it all got too messy for me but you are correct as i have seen test cutting using straw or what looked like straw but obviously long lengths.Give the straw mats a go and let me know what you think.

Hi handforgedkatanas,
Thanks for sharing your experience with straw... I know some people to keep horses so I'll ask them about the best bet.
Could you expand a bit further on what beach mats are? I'm not even sure as to what one is... let alone what they're made from or where to get them! I've had a bit of a google but I get varied results... are they the type that visually resemble tatami?
Cheers

WOOHOO!!! Good luck, maybe. If I want to cut straw beach mats I just found this deal online straw beach mat $1.33 that is close to a friend's house in Dallas. He's going to stop by and pick up 20-25 of them for me to try. If they work out well, that should give me the "no shipping (opposite of the blues)". Fingers are crossed...

I checked out the link ShooterMike listed. It appears that there is a $50.00 minimum. That means 38 mats at $1.33 = $50.54. Shipping to Ohio was $31.38 making the total $81.92. That comes out to about $2.16 per mat.

I remember for a Last Legend yearly cutting party, they ordered some and got them for just over $1.00 a piece. Of course plus shipping.

Beach mats are certainly an alternative but it is misleading to say they are the same as tatami. When folk get a chance, do read the article by Paul Smith over at the mugen Dachi site. That's the www.tameshigiri.com link. It should be under the review link. The full article is linked there as well, from the Iaido Journel site. Most informative in relating to the various offerings. Don't fool yourself into thinking that a beach mat will cut the same as the higher price stuff. Paul breaks down the resistance pretty well. The beach mats do offer a low cost target but if you end up rolling amess of them together to equal a stiffer resistance, target price goes up. Just cutting for fun? Why not, just something to kep in mind if suddenly facing off against other products. Cheers Hotspur; summer is near, so beach mats and noodles aplenty everywhere
