That's one of the forms blades. Not useful for cutting. Probably good for sparring.

Think of it as a Chinese rapier; It will cut, but it excels in thrusting.

It's really weird, because until recently I thought that all Hanwei jian would be suited for cutting (don't have one, so didn't know... I guess). Probably was thinking it'd be more like their katana in terms of quality or something. Shame, since I think a lot of their stuff's pretty nice looking.

I documented some of the problems with their old jian offerings in my Rodell-designed jian review. While blade quality itself wasn't too bad, it was quite thin (width wise), had a narrow tang (okay for the blade width) that had too long of a threaded small-diameter tail (not okay), a grip that didn't fit the tang, and poorly fitted nuts to hold it all together.

Yep, it was actually your review where I first saw mention of it (the Hanwei jian/s being... unspectacular).

That's why you keep a sock or other cloth handy...

Long as you don't put the sock back on.

WOW! I'm glad I came across this. That Jian was on the "to buy" list scheduled for day after tomorrow.
Would it be safe to assume the two handed Jian SH2278 is also for form only?

Uh, well, I would think so, guessing from what the other guys said here. I, unfortunately, do not know. It's also part of the Adam Hsu... line(?), so I'd think it'd be the same. Also, the only difference should be the length of the handle, right?

Yep. Adam Hsu's stuff is forms and light sparring only. Only Hanwei jian that's a cutter is, well, the Hanwei Cutting Jian. Thus the name.

Well, there it is. Thanks for saving me some money, y'all. Now, what should take it's place? Hmmm... think I need to go do some more cyber-shopping.

Jin-Shi, if you have a little extra money for a custom (depending on what you want, can run anywhere from $300 to too much).
CS Gim for an inexpensive, hardy cutter. See the SBG main page for a review with a demonstration of its capabilities.
Hanwei Cutting Jian for a slightly pricier, but more historically accurate cutter.
CS Jade Lion Gim for a prettier CS Gim that has a more accurate weight (approx $400).
Those are the ones I know.

Well, that makes it comparable to the CS Gim.

Wiwingti, Sword Nation and KoA also carry it significantly lower than MSRP. $235 at WWS, $240 at SN and $224 at KoA, bringing it lower than most prices I've seen for the CS Gim.
