So, after waiting two months for my Dynasty Forge o-katana, I get a letter from the Postal Office which basically amounted to: "No sword for you!"
Turns out it's okay to import swords and to own them, but the Postal Office can still decide it can't be shipped within the country. Apparently they've classified it as Dangerous Goods and not only do they refuse to send it to me, but they've actually shipped it back to Marc.
Unbelievable.

Ouch. I feel for ya. Every time I order a sword I fear that the customs guys decide to be dicks and won't give it to me. Hasn't happened yet, but if it did.. I'd go ballistic. 300-400$(PLUS shipping PLUS customs fees) is a small fortune for a jobless student like me.
So yeah, you truly have my sympathies.

That's just the thing: It's literally the post office that are being dicks and deciding I shouldn't have this sword. Customs seem to be totally okay with it.

Damn!
That's pretty unbelievable. I feel really sorry for you, man, who could expect that?
Why did they ship it back if it was dangerous goods? Why didn't they offer to have it picked up at the customs office?

Why did they ship it back if it was dangerous goods? Why didn't they offer to have it picked up at the customs office? Hell if I know. Standard procedure, I suppose.
Can you talk to a local MP?
I don't know, what's an MP?

Yeah, you should talk to an ombudsman. The job of an ombudsman is sort of a mediator to help citizens with problems when the gears of bureaucracy bind up. Sometimes it's a dedicated office, sometimes representatives fill this role, and other times (such as in corporations) it's someone higher up in the relevant office.
I'd try to get in touch with the postmaster first, if you already haven't.

There's a reason I am usually pretty generic about what I put on customs slips. Customs may not have a problem with whatever is in the box, but the PO might. So instead of "Sword" try "Collectible" Or "Reenactment Gear" or some such. "Costume Piece" maybe...

do you have the same problem using fed-ex or UPS? In my experience no, he would not have the same problem with FedEx or UPS... remember, he said customs didn't care, the post office itself sent it back. Using FedEx and UPS you don't deal with the post office... its much more likely to make it into the country. The problem with that is, it also costs 3 sometimes 4 times as much to ship overseas with UPS or FedEx as it does with the postal services... and there are often larger import and customs fees with shipping FedEx or UPS also. So, its sort of pick your poison... pay an ass load up front for a better chance of getting the item without trouble, or pay less but take your chances with a grumpy postal system. Lose/lose. Lame.
