I purchased a used katana, this one to be exact: www.chenessinc.com/shosen.htmIt had some damage to the tip: Some bad chips and one was a long chip that was sorta rolled over. So... I tried my hand at polishing for the very first time. Took me all day, here is what it got me (plus a sore back, lol): Opinions? I'm not done yet, still need to sharpen then do a final polish on everything. So since I am still in the process any advice/tips would be great. I used some stones to grind out the chip/roll then some fine sandpaper then finished with a polishing compound, some compound made by Mother's, mag wheel polish or something. However one thing I noticed.... where'd the hamon go!? Apparently I polished away the hamon. How exactly can I get it back? I searched around but I keep finding some extreme methods with all kinds of acid which I have no idea on how to get a hold of. I don't need it so pronounced, just a slight hamon or something would be cool. Is there an easy way I can bring it back with something I can easily get at a local store? Thanks for any advice/help

Well, there was never a real hamon to begin with, so you'll just have to etch a fake one back on. Try using some masking tape to put a faux "clay coat" stencil on the blade. Take some vinegar or lemon juice, add a little dish soap, then heat it in the microwave until nice and hot. Then apply it to the blade to etch the fake hamon back on. Use light application of the Mother's in between a series of etches to remove gunk and oxides, and be sure to neutralize the acid with something like windex.
Looks like a good quick repair so far. ^_^ Also looks like a lot of niku on the edge in the kissaki. Maybe thin that out some.
