So my friends bday is coming up and he loves war sword types so we were all thinking of pitching in and getting him one. What I wanted to know is how stiff do you guys think the blade is? I know swords like this arent supposed to be incredibly stiff or thick but some of the reviews seem to point to it being to whippy. Is it as bad as a windlass in flexibility? Does it feel like it would do well at setting aside cuts fromm other swords or pole arms? Id like all the input I can get, thanks.

I'm not familiar with this particular blade, but note that flexibility and "whippyness" are not the same animal. Flexibility is often a good thing. Whippyness occurs when that flexibility is not properly distributed in the blade, typically due to a lack of distal/profile taper. What I have seen and read leads me to suspect that this blade is indeed flexible...but in a good way. (again, I've never handled this sword so take that with a grain of salt )

It's a sword designed by tinker, I don't think he would let them release it if he wasn't happy with the specs and the way it handles.

I have a Tinker/Hanwei hand and a half blade that i hybridized into a jian. it is a wonderful blade. there is a moderate flexibility, but at the same time very sturdy. the tempering/ hardening is so well done, that when I went to drill the tang to install a handle pin, i could not drill until half way down the tang towards the pommel. i burnt out 3 drill bits.

I have handled a couple Hanwei/Tinker Great Swords of War... they have some flexability, as a huge sword designed for cutting should... but I did not find them whippy. If you are not used to swords of that type you might be a bit surprised by the flex... but I think its a VERY well made sword and I want one. I guess thats the best endorsment I could give... I have an Albion Baron, a similar lage cutting sword, and I still want a Tinker GSoW... so they are pretty good. At Wiwingti Sword Supply they are less the 200 bucks I think, thats like 1/5th the cost of my Baron... at that price, like Tony the Tiger Said... its not just good, its Grrrrrreat!

I agree with shadowhowler. I have GSoW and it's the best you can get in this type without going Albion. Flex is substantial, but it's supposed to be like that although some people might not like it.

I have a GSOW, and i also happen to have two other type XIII swords, an Atrim and a Tinker and as Shadow said even if they cost me up almost 5 time the price of the GSOW ( which i bought at wiwingti ) it still holds up very well compared to the other two. Price wise its indeed one hell of a deal, its just that color... i already began some mods on it Its a freaking huge sword that handles really well and forget about the flex, its just ok. Its just not much of a looker. That guy has pretty good friends !

I am thinking of getting the same sword and it's not the flex that has me undeceided it's weather I want a large two hander or one of the single handed mid-evils. I dont know if you did a thourough search but here are some reviews i was given buy some fellow forumites (Dam it is helpfull around here) BTw as far as i can tell Wiwingti has the best price and seems to be a good guy. /index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=swordreviews&thread=14067&post=235773 /index.cgi?action=display&board=swordreviews&thread=12204&page=1#200681 /index.cgi?action=display&board=swordreviews&thread=13256&page=1#220260

I own this sword so I can tell you what it's like. It's big but not unruly. What I mean is that it is very agile and easy to maneuver. The blade does have quite a bit of flex in it and mine bows ever so slightly when held flat down. But not as much flex as my Windlass Baron. Rather I feel it has a perfectly acceptable amount for a sword of this type and size. If you all chipped in to purchase this sword I am sure you will see a happy face when the gift is opened. My only complaint is the grip. I re-gripped mine because I could not stand the color and number of risers.

I have the GSOW and I agree with most of what has already been said. It is flexible but not overly so and not whippy. The grip color is a bit...different. The only gripe I really have is with the edge. Not that its a very bad edge but it is a beveled edge and I have to really get it moving to slice cleanly. One of these days I will get around to reshaping it and do a before and after vid but the sword is tempered so well it may take a while. In any case for less than $200 its an excellent deal for a beast of a sword and for $170 at Wiwingti it is an absolute steal.

I have one of these, and I am very happy with it. My only complaints are wishing it was polished more, and it won't go all the way into the scabbard without a lot of force The sword handles great for a large sword, and is still a lot lighter than my Claymore. The Tinker GSOW is the sword in my avatar picture ;D
