I noticed on MRL's site, in their longsword and two handed sword section, they have a number of new Windlass swords that are of higher than average prices for them. They also seem to be fairly light weight, according to what's listed. Is Windlass maybe trying to up their quality?

I've seen this too, some of those swords look pretty nice. Maybe they're trying to branch out and try for a wider audience. I look forward to reading reviews of these.

I'm guessing that they are trying to compete with Valiant Armory's Signature collection, since three (by my count) of their new swords come with belt and scabbard. If one of the new swords was an oakeshott type XIV, something akin to the discontinued masterpiece, I, for one, would be interested, but that is not the case. Oddly, all 3 swords share the same blade dimensions - 34" long, 1-7/8" wide, 3/16" thick. Not much for variety and a better than average chance of whippyness. Oh well, at least they are trying to do something new (by copying someone else).
Also of note - MRL is now THE place to get ringmesh...if you want no size or style options and want to spend nearly twice as much.

The new hand-and-a-half swords have similar specs but different cross sections. One is clearly a Kriegschwert copy for the same price. On the plus side, they now have the umbrellas in 3 different hilts; the original Gothic Bastard Sword, a Musashi Katana and a viking hilt.

If a sword is done right it wont necessarily be whippy, I am so sick of that bloody term and the way people use it incorrectly but then what else is new and different.

Just keep on shying away from Windlass because of the whippiness, and you'll miss some good blades and good project pieces.
Some of the Windlass blades most touted for being whippy are stiffer than some of the Hanwei or Valiant pieces.
That being said, I will more than likely just keep buying ones off of the DOTD that strike my fancy. If I'm gonna spend 3 to 4 bills it will go to Sonny, Gus or Eyal.

People refear to Windlass swords as being 'Whippy' because they consistently make weapons that display that effect. The thin 3/16th blades and the lack of distil taper mean that the longer the sword, the more likely you have a limp wet noodle for a blade. Chris: You have Ringmesh? I really, Really want some Ringmesh.

I'm sure the ringmesh will rule... if not you can send it to me. One of these new Windlass sword/suspension packages looks a LOT like a Malatesta.

For my part, I'm disappointed in their new swords (judging solely from the pics, of course)...the Oakeshott XVIII looks o.k-ish...but I can only ask myself: what are they thinking? What ever extra secret ingredient they are putting in their morning coffee, they should cease immediately. If, as has been suggested here, they are trying to emulate Valiant's Signatures or Hanwei-Tinkers: it's a sad failure.
Why, oh why, can't they come up again with something in the line of -quality and handling-wise- the Type XIV, the Erbach, the XVth c. longsword, 5-lobed viking, etc....or like some older models they had that were nice for the price: the european sword, the Dracula sword, etc.? They have been able to do so in the past, why no more? And why discontinue perfectly good swords and for what? For those?! The eternal question! The absurdity of it all!
Most of their new swords look like toys in my opinion, wall-hangers...something's missing, something is very wrong: profile taper, fat grips, toy-like appearance, etc....There are hundreds of antique swords pictured in hundreds of books, displayed in museums, etc., that have not or rarely been replicated: why not base new models on those? Forget the flower engravings and extra frills: get the damn edged thing right. I know there are no answers to these questions. They seem to be on some new planet somewhere in the 8th dimension with Buckaroo Banzai...or down in a rabbit hole speaking with smoking caterpillars...
edited to add: indeed, the umbrellas are very nice. edited, part 2: o.k., maybe overly severe, I went back and looked again, some of the new blades are o.k....but, I'm without pity for the hilt parts!

True, true, Windlass Sword of Granson blade I used for my baskethilt project is very stiff, even stiffer than needed. But it's because it's a bit overbuild.

Not at all. Every time I see someone saying "whippy" I want to claw my own eyes out.
