i found these whilst browsing armstreet.com/This first one is a variation on the brigandine, strips of leather riveted between layers of brocade. Very, um luxuious looking. i almost wouldn't want to fight in it. i Still found the idea very interesting. armstreet.com/store/armor/1/302.htmlThis next one was pretty tempting. i did seriously consider buying it for a while there. Normally when one sees lamellar armor, it's a full shirt of just leather plates knitted together. i like the different take they have on it. armstreet.com/store/armor/1/202.htmlMy experince with Armstreet has been considerably pleasant. i approached them about custom work & their reply was essentially 'No problem. It's like a pizza, you can get whatever you want on it.' Here's a piece i recieved from them a few weeks ago- a close up of the trim, the main reason why i bought it- A bit flashy yes, but i like it. Last one really isn't odd, i figured i'd put it in. i really salivated over it for a while. i just couldn't justify spending that much on it though. Very nice. i love how he ends his description- 'Buy this armor. Look sharp. Feel invincible. Drive your enemies before you. Hear the lamentation of their women.' www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=150528690D

I just had to ask them about that Khatangu Degel. It is Incredibly similar to what I am ever so slowly working on myself...

They actually responded to me and said that on Tuesday they will kick around ideas on making it with less expensive rivets and with wool instead of silk brocade. Silk, while historically accurate, will not hold up in a brocade even to just wearing it to the fair on a rare occasion.
I fired an email back asking about getting it in a raw silk with no design. Raw silk is much sturdier and cheaper than brocades. And it weighs so much less than wool. Also, like linen, it's much better for hot weather than wool or silk brocade...

They have agreed to redesign it for me using less expensive fitting and rivets and different cloth. Looks like it'll have cotton on the inside and raw silk on the outside... Guesstimate was $500 or so for the armour itself. No gambeson, no helm, no bracers, no accessories. I expect a final price by early next week and an expected time of completion...

...And they are making it. Cotton interior lining, Raw Silk exterior in Black with Red Trim. Simple, solid, inexpensive furniture. I should have it in about a month. Pics and review in a new thread when it gets here. $780 shipped.

Taran, that's very cool. It's a Chinese armor, yes?
On that third one, all I can see is the gap between the plates on the centerline.

It's the top one, the khatangu degel. The pretty one. Only mine won't be so pretty but more useful.

Good to hear Taran. i really appreciate how flexible they are. Do you think the cotton on the inside will make it any more breathable? i'm wondering how that armor would wear. i'm assuming it would be a bit lighter & flexible than most armor. It's also nice that an armor would help to keep you cool i was also wondering why they went with something like that in the first place. Did they just always want to look fabulous? D

Well, the dressiness of it would be a later Korean modification. During the Ming Dynasty, the Koreans put much store in looking Good on the battlefield. Seeing as how they handily repelled several Japanese invasions and maintained mostly peaceful relations with China during that period, I guess it worked.

"Threadomancy": Posting to what's considered a "dead" thread. A pun on "necromancy", ie. raising something from the dead. If a topic hasn't been responded to for more than a month, or is off the first page of a busy portion of the board, it's usually considered a dead thread. Posting to a thread that's 'dead' is threadomancy. --Edward
