Actually DiCaprio was pretty good in "Blood Diamond." But "Avery, Viking King" does sound like a bit of a winner. Hey, he looks the part and has the Axe work down.

Who do you think Kills Leo in the movie? The story line is pretty basic..... I sit around the hall drinking mead, ravaging servant girls and killing trolls when all of the sudden Gilbert Grapes brother shows up with an army of angry Jewish people. A massive battle ensues where finally he and I meet on the battlefield and in a gracefull stroke of my axe he falls to the ground, headless. His dying thought is of a far away water tower. As soon as he dies, for some reason the battle completely stops andthe movie cuts to a wedding scene with me and the brave servant girl who turned out to really be a queen.
And "Avery, viking king" is only the working title....Mel hasn't decided on the final name yet......good guy, Mel.
;D
Edit: if you haven't seen "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape" you should probably watch this...

Well if Orlando Bloom can play a crusader in Kingdom of Heaven, a swordsman in Pirates of the Caribbean and a prince of Troy why can't Decaprio play a viking. They could beef him up or he could wear a body suit/thick clothing to make him look tougher. Hell Tony Curtis played in the original "Vikings" movie and he was a little wuss.

I'm sure that all Norsemen were not of heroic stature, they probably had their big burly buys, their fat slow guys, and their small scrappy guys mixed in with the Adonnis like war gods.

Quite true; there have been studies done that show the average height of a norseman from around 700 to 900 or so was about 5'9".

When you think about it, the guy built like Schwarzenegger would probably be the first one killed to get him out of the way. Unless he had some mad war skills, he would be the first victim.

I saw "Shutter Island" this afternoon. Leo's got range, he could be a viking. Hell, Tom Cruise did "Lestat", anythings possible.

I think it will be good, while I'm not his hugest fan I dont mind what Mel G tries to do, and for this he's got amibition, want to do it in the old language (which couldnt hurt for authenticity on this) he wants it all period correct which GODS KNOWS alot of viking history buffs have wanted for decades, is gonna throw a big budget at it which always helps and leo while again not his biggest fan I like him in man in iron mask, if someone can whip him into proper focus for it I think he could will pull it off, when he has a beard he looks like he could be a young norse guy fresh from the farm on a raid. I would like to see both the barbaric and honourable sides seen in this movie about the culture, the norse were a multi facated people when it came to living, one mans barbarism was anothers neccessity. Oh and vikings in a shield wall rather then running around like gooses might be nice

I used to be on the "Leo is for girls" bandwagon until I started watching everything after Titanic. He's got some range indeed and I think he could bring more realism to the viking myth. Don't get me wrong, the vikings were some badasses, but they weren't strolling around with 75% of their body weight in muscle... I wouldn't think... I don't know, I wasn't there.

Brenno:
Cool beans! Monahan's inclusion makes me feel better about this. When I saw the theatrical cut of "Kingdom of Heaven" I loathed it, when I saw the director's cut, I pretty much loved it (yeah, even with Orlando Bloom, even with Orlando Bloom, let me say it again, even with Orlando Bloom). I'll be honest----I've been on a compulsive kick lately thinking, "Why don't they make more historical movies?" We've finally got the CGI down pat enough that we can pixel in things we need, pretty convincingly. If we can do the kraken, we can do other stuff, too, like Jerusalem in 1100.
I'm not hating on Leo, either. Yeah, I used to think he was just a pretty boy, but he's done some fine work, and he can do tough a lot better than I used to think. (Yeah, even I, even the great and mighty Cossack, can be wrong----although damn infrequently.) I'm not sure he's right for a Scandahoovian movie.
I think one of the reasons I'm apparently down on it is that I want it to be great, and I'm afraid of having my heart broken again.

Im sure it wil be at least decent. Apocalypto was solid, and well, braveheart is a classic.
I don't understand why in the article they insist that the Vikings need a hero character we can sympathise with, and that is hard for them cos they the vikings were bastards. Well why not depict them as bastards? Why not keep them as the bad guys?

I don't really like good/evil separation. These times are too grey, no black and white. Vikings didn't go viking just because they are bastards and Saxons aren't automatically good just because they are on a defence in this case.

The older I get, the more I question the whole idea of "good guys" and "bad guys." The world was different then. I remember watching "With Fire and Sword" and thinking, "Yeah, those dirty Cossacks had it coming, rising up against the noble Polish/Lithuanian nobility!" Then I remembered reading "Taras Bulba" and thinking, "Yeah, those dirty Polish/Lithuanian nobles had it coming, suppressing the noble Cossacks!"
A lot of it depends on which tribe you're a part of. When a strong tribe meets a weak tribe (or a weaker tribe, or a momentarily weaker tribe), maybe they'll get along and cooperate in peace and harmony. But that's not the way to bet.
The Romans crushed and murdered and killed and civilized and imposed order on a lot of the world. The Romans were a strong tribe. But they frittered away a good bit of their strength, and then the Germans showed up . . . and the Germans were the stronger tribe.
Was Vercingetorix a hero? A rebel? Both? Does it depend on where you're looking from? What about William Wallace? Hernan Cortes? Genghis Khan?
We like to pretend that good guys are all good, and bad guys are all bad, or at least evil. That's nice and all, but I propose that it's a somewhat limited view of how things really are.

Maybe some gray, but Hitler, Pol Pot, and Idi Amin are 3 that come to mind quickly that there was nothing but pure evil

Agreed----but I'd be tempted to file them under "exceptions, rule, proving thereof."
And Iosif Vissiaronovich Dzhugashvili?

I just dont want another pathfinder to happen, I havent seen it but I got the gist of it ........ yeah they were pricks to others but they had alot of camradarie and personal investment in their community. They just believed in seizing a good oppurtunity , I would like to see the transition of pagans and christian norse in it too, while I'm rooting for the pagans it would be good to see the human reasons why those that converted did. There is PLENTY of source material of accurate quality out there now for them to get this right, lets hope they do
