I know most of you have probably been involved in sparring, reenactment groups, historical thingy-mah-bobs, so I know someone will have an answer. Anyway, let me explain how I can be on this forum and not know what it is. I know it is some association where people perform medieval reenactments and combat simulations, but is there more detail? I'm 15 and I'm from Australia and I'm really keen to participate in medieval related events. The only time I get to run around in my funny armour is once a year at the local fayre, so I want to get more involved. Today I went to the local archery club to try out, it was great! I think I'll sign up and do it regularly. But aside from that, I also want to learn to fight, and spar with wooden wasters. Anyway, could anyone tell me more specifically what SCA is, how it works and if I'm able to join (given my age)? I mean playing Neverwinter Nights and D&D is fun and all, but you get bloodshot eyes if you do it for too long. Thanks! PRP.

Thanks for the link, Willy!
I looked on their site earlier. But there are so many sections, and sub-sections, and sub-sections in the sub-sections. I don't know what I'm looking for.
Apparently people (under 18) are able to join, that's all I've found so far.

G'day PRP! I haven't been a member of the SCA for quite a while, but I've plenty of friends who still are. The website for the Kingdom of Lochac (ie Australia) is ... www.sca.org.au/ It has a listing of local groups so you can find the one nearest to where-ever you are in this wide-brown-sheep-paddock I'm not sure what the current rules are but back in my day you could be a member at any age, but couldn't fight (officially) until you were 16. We had plenty under that age attend fighter-practice and train- they just couldn't fight in official events. You could attend/participate otherwise in most events without even being a member. But that was a loooooong time ago, so things could be different now. The contacts on the above website should be able to answer more of your questions. Please feel free to PM me if you want any more help or information! Cheers Marc E PS- Love your user-name! I have a... special relationship with penguins, and love punk as well! +1 just for that!

Thanks for the reply Marc! Well, penguins truly are the most awesome animal out there. They waddle and eat fish, what could be better? Punk music is great, too. I can just imagine a penguin with a mohawk and a studded belt headbanging to some music. ;D I'll take a look at that site now. It's all really official. There are titles and ranks and everything! Looks like I have some homework to do. Best of luck, PRP. P.S. Thanks for the karma!

Also look into the New Varangian Guard as they seem to be bigger in Aus. Whereabouts are you in Aus?

I wish there was more SCA activity in my area. I am about 100 miles north and 100 miles south of the closest two groups. i guess i'll look into it this summer and maybe head to some events. I've always wanted to be a part of the SCA.

Anyone can join the SCA...you have to be 16 with parent/guardian consent or 18 to fight. At least that is what the SCA insurance covers. Your local group maybe more strict.

Yeah New Varangian Guard are pretty big in oz, the Viking Mercenaries that became the elite byzantine bodyguard, tempted to join myself being a big viking fanatic. If your into the viking scene its pretty awesome. There are other period SCA groups all around oz too. Depending on your state google hunting should get you there okay.

Not just vikings either, any culture that the Eastern Roman Empire came in contact with.

The SCA is not a reenactment group, it's a recreation group. We just try to recreate the Feel of the Middle Ages without too many worries about accuracy. We're there to have fun and learn something and beat people with sticks.
Children under 16 most certainly Can join and even fight. It's not the same fighting as the adults, has no melees that I've ever heard about and uses padded weapons (more nerfish) to avoid injuries. 16-18 gets you into fighting with and like the adults, but you're restricted on the events you can fight in.
One thing I woud recommend is that you have some idea of your persona. Where your SCA character is from, what his history is, that sort of thing, and build your armour to reflect that.
In my case, Taran ap Dafydd is a former slave from the Jin Empire off in the Far East whose master was killed by the Han Chinese when they overthrew the Yuan Dynasty in the 1360s. He left China and traveled West with his wife to find the land of his ancestors.
Most folks are a bit simpler than that. A knight from this part of France, a common soldier from that part of Germany. A peasant, a merchant, a noble of one kind or another, either doing well on down on his luck...

ska is a form of punk rock, they say it has roots in reggae music. Quite the opposite, actually: Ska is an older style than Reggae. See here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkaSorry for this brief derailment of thread.

Not just vikings either, any culture that the Eastern Roman Empire came in contact with. BW is more right than not. The Varangian guard only existed for ~150 years as vikings. By Alexis Comnenus's rule (late 11th c.) they were mostly anglo-saxons and even sometimes Rus'. The history of the eastern Varangians goes well outside their more widely known exploits in Byzantium. I'm written a paper on the Varangians in the republic of Novgorod. I know for certain that Yaroslav I the Wise used them extensively in his eventually unification of the thrones of Novgorod and Kiev.
