Gents:
I've been thinking swords, and thinking about swords has meant I want a decent representative selection of 'em. Arming sword, saber, funky dao (fung ki dao?), smallsword . . . .
Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Here (and there too!) is the issue: a dagger, or at least a knife.
I need a good Euro dagger or knife, and I'm asking for input and advice. I figure a knife gets a lot more use, and probably a lot more carry, than a sword will. Oh, yes, I'm Walter-Mitty-ing here----I'm not going to tuck a Coustille or something under my cloak and think I'm badder than Shaft, Superfly, James Bond and Kung-Fu all rolled into one. (Although I'll give a karma to anyone who can tell me where that line is from!)
That's the parameters, yup, a dagger or a knife, that falls into the Medieval and Renaissance period. I'll be adding others, from the Japanese, ancient European, and other traditions, later on. I've got my Caucasian jones covered with a Windlass kindjal, which I pretty much like, if that indicates my line of thinking.
Any input?

I bought a DSA Medieval Knight Dagger, and did a review of it here:

A&A is running a special on some of their daggers till the end of the month. For about $10 more than a DSA sharp you could have one of A&A's www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=19284I forgot to add Shipping included so it comes out actually less than DSA while the special remains.

Hey man, I'm right at least twice a day! (Yeah, just like a stopped clock.) I was actually thinking of the album Fandango by ZZ Top, in the medley "Mellow Down Easy."
And for everyone else who contributed: many thanks, those are some nice looking daggers. I'm leaning towards an A&A sharpie. . . .

Mine was used in the mid 80's to describe the group/album on the cover.......not as lyrics. Looks like yours was first.

That ones been around for about 20 years with a wire wrapped grip. I had one of the wire wrap a good many years ago and I'd not suggest it. The wood though does look a lot better than the wire wrap ever did.

I've been wondering about daggers myself... I'm really not willing to shell out the cash for a good one, though... I think of each of my $60 fighting knives (2 Ka-bars, a Fairburn-Sykes, and a secondhand Cold Steel triple-action) as rather expensive now, on the upper end of what I'll pay for short blades...
**edit** ...does Deepeeka even temper their blades..? If so, I may buy a dagger or two off of them, they're some of the few things in my price range...

...ugh. So they heat the steel up to shape it, quench it once, and ship it out? ...I'll stick to my Ka-bars. they even make for decent kitchen knives.

I had two Depeeka swords and their blades were heat treated at least in some way. One was too hard and a bit brittle, but one was quite tough blade. I used both for sparring and one bent just a little but stayed that way and didn't bend further and other stayed straight but since it was a bit brittle got a long shallow crack along the edge. I used on both anyway and I think they could be classified as functional swords although not very good. They were thick and heavy, but their hit and miss heat treat might be similar to a large percentage of actual historical swords. (I know what is a good sword, I have Del Tins, Hanwei Tinkers, had Windlasses and Gen2s in the past, but I still think Depeeka makes at least some of their swords more or less usable.)

hmmm... and I don't really need a dagger to do more than hold a decent edge at least as well as a stainless blade... if I ever have to stab a man in armor with one of them, something has gone horribly wrong... all I really want is suitable a utility knife for when I'm in costume. Deepeeka is once again a maybe... so are a few lower-end Windlass daggers. **edit** I think I may have found what I'm looking for... not exactly a euro dagger, but my costume is from a Euro/Persian/Asian hybrid fantasy world anyway. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=2204&name=Ritter+Steel+Moro+Kris+Fighting+Knife...I just need to make the hilt darker, I think I can find the sandpaper and dark stain to accomplish that.
