I've had a fantasy story knocking around in my head for several years, and even though it's probably going to be a novel (if I can ever finish it), I'm a very visual thinker and I've been designing various aspects of the culture to which the main characters belong. Fashion, architecture, and yes, weapons! I'm basing their swords on a mix of falchions, messers and heavy sabers. The ones that look like viking and ancient celtic swords are meant to be from an earlier era. I want them to look functional and practical, and not overly ornate like a lot of fantasy swords, but I'm also concerned that I'm not putting enough of a fantastical twist on them. More pictures as I develop the designs.

I love the short bladed complex hilt although I would make the blade thinner and more sabre like, but that is just my preference. They dont actually look that fantasy like some of them have a basis in historical examples.

Yeah, I don't like the typical overly ornate and impractical-looking fantasy swords, so I tried to make them more historical and practical-looking. But I think I went too far, so now I'm trying to figure out how to add back in some subtle fantasy elements.

I seem to be almost incapable of doing an art or writing project without overdoing it (which is why I rarely finish them). I set out to design some swords, and now I'm designing a whole sword culture and history. After some more sketching, I think I'm zeroing in on the look I want. This latest group is meant to be swords from the culture's early period. Middle and late period (when the story takes place) designs will follow. I've more-or-less settled on three styles of blades, each of which will evolve from one period to another. I call them "war blades" (upper left), "hunter's blades" (right) and "dragon's wing blades" (lower left).

I'm definitely getting to the look I'm after, but it still needs some refining. Middle period: Late period:

I personally like that you're going for a less fantastical, more realistic look. I wouldn't worry too much about them not looking fanciful enough-- practical-looking swords are beautiful in their own right. Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why you're sticking to curved single-edged patterns?
