Greetings all, just wondering if anyone knows roughly when steel scabbards started to be used. Was primarily at the onset of the Civil War, or was it earlier than that?
Thanks Tibbs

steel scabbard plus rough handling plus sword going in sheath = certain death of the blade and little chunks of the blade sitting at the bottom of the scabbard

Far before the US Civil war; the British were using them in their late 18th century cavalry swords.
