Allright, it's not exactly a sword, but it needs some fixin', Yesterday I got my MRL Spiked Warhammer in the mail, from KOA (this one: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=600756&name=War+Hammer ) I took it out back, to smash some coconuts and test her out. Well on the second or third hit, I must have accidentally hit the top spike on the stand, because the shaft split right down the middle. So, either I'm a lot stronger than I thought, or Windlass used some kind of crap wood, or I just plain don't know how to use a hammer. Naturally, the thing to do is to carve a new haft. What's the best wood to use for this kind of thing? I thought the original was cherry, but it seems too fragile for that. Any ideas? P.S. I'd take pics, but my camera's busted too. I just can't have nice things, can I?

Was this thing meant to be used? If so, I'd ask KOA to replace it. A coconut and a wooden stand should be more than safe enough for a weapon designed to crush metal armor. You got a lemon I'd say.

I don't know if their return policy would cover it, but sure, I'll ask them. I read that they can't accept altered or damaged merch.

KoA is pretty nice bunch of people...that said, this hammer in particular has pretty crap wood. For safety sake, I would just replace the handle with something nice and sturdy...and if you want you can make it look nicer with things like wenge, purple heart, cocobolo and what not. But any good stabilized hardwood will be fine. Ironwood would make for a near indestructible shaft also.

Thanks Cold. I just talked to Ryan W. from Kult, he said they can't just accept a return, but he'd talk to MRL and see if he could do something. Nice guy. Do you know if there's an online source where I can order some of those materials? Some of them sound kinda exotic; Ironwood's hard to find in my area.
Also, I just noticed, the langets got all twisted up too. I was able to muscle one of them back into shape with a pair of pliers, but the other one seems to have a "sideways" bend, for lack of a better word, right after the third eyehole, and I can't get it right. No sweat, if I can find better wood for the haft, I can just cut the langets down to 3 screws instead of 6.

A relatively cheap way out would be to alter an existing maul or sledge hammer. Check them out at your local hardware store. It will probably cheaper than buying a piece of wood and most of the work will be done.

MRL uses sheesham wood in everything they make. It's a tropical hardwood used alot in India because it grows fast and comes in a variety of colors. However, being a tropical wood, it also dries out too much in non-tropical climates. This causes it to split and check easily. It is not a good wood to use on weaponry; amd they have been told this time and time again by their vendors and customers.
I'd recommend replacing it with a haft of hickory or ash.

Well I have two lumber companies near where I live so I´m a bit spoiled. I can go into the scarp pile and find pieces I need . Do a search for exotic hardwood. If that brings up too much, search for wenge. Anyplace that sells wenge will have what you want .

I'm thinkin' I might just cut down a sledgehammer, or an axe handle, and whittle the haft into the right shape. Now, should I just use the langet screws that originally came with it, or should I figure out a way to rivet them?
