Hey guys, I am interested in buying a Lutel sword and I would like to know if anyone already owns one. I have read great things about them on My Armory, every swords reviewed by them got rave reviews. I am hesitating between 3 models the 12018: the 12001: and the 12028 The price is also right, for 8100 CZk, Czech money($330 u.s.), you get a single handed sword, a fitted scabbard and leather belts. Let me know what you think and know about the company and their products. www.lutel.cz/

I have never heard of them, but some of them do look nice and I am in the market for a good one hander.

MyArmoury has favorable reviews for the Lutel Brand. Not these swords in paticular but overall.

JP,
I have been eying them for a while as well. They seem like a really good product, especially for the money.
I just haven't been able to convince myself to risk the money for a product I am not sure of getting in a reasonable time. Not that I've heard anything bad about Lutel. I would just like to hear from someone who's ordered something and had it shipped to the U.S. lately. But shipping to Canada wouldn't likely be any different. If you decide to get one of their swords, I would appreciate knowing exactly how smoothly the process went and if there were any particular snags regarding shipping or language barriers.
Thanks, Mike

From what I've readf, they make them upon recieving an order. I don't think they keep any in stock, per se (I could be wrong). The only bad thing I've heard is (as Mike mentioned) the language barrier. Apparently, there has been the odd order that hasn't come out exactly as expected (not just custom stuff, but whether or not the sword was made sharp or blunt, and there looks to be a fair amount of difference in blade profiles between the sharps and blunts). I just haven't been able to convince myself to wire $300 or $400 to the Czech Republic, and then wait 2 months, 4 months, whatever their backlog is, for a sword to arrive safely at my door just the way I ordered it. Shipping is likely fairly steep too for a sword sized package. Personally, I'd kill for one of their two-handed 15th-16th Century sabers. If you go through with it, JP, I definitely want to hear how it goes too.

I'd rather go with a local sword making company than having to go overseas to get it. They look ok but the only knowledge i have of them is one sword from a custom project over on myarmoury.com and that isn't enough to go on to risk several hundred dollars.

I think Larry, a forumite here once wrote that he order a KATZBALGER from them, I hope he sees this and replies. I read some European reviews on line, mainly from England and they all say that delay and language were the biggest problems. However, they all say that the quality is excellent also. I too have to convince myself to wire $300 plus the the Czech Republic.

Hello JP..... good memory ;D Yup, I've only just ordered a semi-customized Katzbalger from them and would have to wait another 2-3 mths (according to LUTEL, or rather, Mr Zdenek); However, gut feeling tells me I'll have to wait at least 6 mths - according to the ave. duration on Lutel's website waiting list... But I'm not complaining as I know it's worth the wait ;D Yes, I do have the some reservation initially, having to wire-transfer the $$$ instead of the usual credit car/paypal payment. I just do not feel secure, somehow; But the temptation is just too much for me, and I decided to bite the bullet.. after doing some basic research of Lutel from the Net. I am not really impressed by the speed of response during my course of email correspondence with Mr Zdenek... and also, his writings requiring more time to understand, at times; but I reminded myself that he's Czech and English not his primary language of communications Zdenek's email response are usu. short & sharp, probably don't come across as 'friendly' to most of you all, but again, English language may not his forte. And with regards to shipping, it's significantly CHEAPER than what Reliks quoted me, so no complain from me ;D I'd just have to wait till I physically handle the sword in order to be more helpful... So sorry, JP

I just found out that By-The-Sword carries Lutel. They only have one model in hand for now but who knows... I will drop them a line. Thanks Larry, it was very informative and just about confirms what all of us thought or read about. Let us know how it is the minute you get it.

Ah yes.. By-the-sword does carry Lutel product(s) - I noticed recently - but I had not clarify with them details as I've already ordered from Lutel and have no resources to get any stuffs in near future Do check it out with By-the-Sword, the guys there are very responsive ;D On the hindsight, Mr Zdenek's (Lutel) English isn't as bad as what I seem to indicate, but really not those fluent sort. This will be my most expensive purchase and I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival; I'll definitely come out with a review as soon as I get it... but I'm not sure if it's suitbale to post the review here as it's well over the sub-300 category of this forum ;D

By The Sword used to carry 4 or 5 Lutel models, but they were specially made for BTS for their "Live Steel" sparring line, and, so, were blunt. I would have bought one, had they been sharp. Lutel's quality is way above what their prices indicate, from everything I've read at myArmoury. I haqve no concerns about their quality or honesty, I just want to make totally sure that I'm gonna get exactly what I want before I wire the cash.

Pulling a Rammstein on us, aren't you larry ? Gratz on your purchase (hope it comes sooner than later ;D!) Uh-oh... Nooo.... I'm innocent! From the Lutel website, they've not even started work on my order, so it's gonna be a long, long... long wait, I guess --> kriegschwert, I do have similar concerns like yours initially - like having to wired 'cash' to a faraway Czech address, without seeing the end product till months later. I mean, it's so different from buying off-the-shelf pieces from Reliks or By-the-sword inc... and using credit card payment where there're some sense of security! I'll keep you guys posted once I got hold of mine Katzbalger- in terms of quality, expectations differential (if any), shippings, packing etc.. But I'll not be able to comment anything w.r.t. cutting as I ordered mine blunt (with a specified '1-mm' edge).

O, by the way... I seem to notice that the blade geometry of my Lutel Katzbalger doesn't really fall into any of the Oakeshott's typology (according to my little knowlegde of the typology)... hmm... wonder if that's concern to you guys - kriegschwert & jpfranco

That's why you ordered a semi custom. Iam not to worried about the typology of the swords, I am not a so called purist. If I like the sword and it looks historically accurate enough that's good for me.

ermm... I actually do not quite mind the blade typology. Me not a purist either I only customized its 'S'-shape guard to one with twisted style, owing to personal preferences. I brought the typology issue up 'case you guy have some 'purist' sort of expectations Lutel products, I discover, are in quite different range compared to that of Albion, Arms & Armor, DelTin, etc.

I am not to worried about the typology of the swords, I am not a so called purist. If I like the sword and it looks historically accurate enough that's good for me. That's pretty much how I feel. Keep in mind also that the Oakeshott Typology is not inflexible in and of itself. There are many historical swords that don't fall neatly into one Type or another. It's more of a general guide to the dominant styles from the Middle Ages/early Renaissance.
