Hey guys! ;D So... I've decided, after so many people being impressed with the H/T offerings, that I'll temporarily step down from my VA fanboyism and try one out. ;D With the Bastard being only $190, with specs pretty much exactly to my liking (short blade, long grip), and a cutting style profile, it's my natural choice. That being said... which one should I get? The fullered version, listed here; kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2411(2lbs, 6.5 oz, 3.5" POB) or the non-fullered version, found here; kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2400(2lbs, 8.5 oz, 4.75" POB) Both swords are 42.5" long with a 33" blade and a 7" grip, btw. I'm particularly interested in hearing the opinions of people who have handled one or both of these swords, but any and all input is appreciated. Also, can anyone compare one or both of these to the Valiant Armoury Practical Longsword for me? I have that (my favorite sword) so it would be a good reference point. What do you think? -Slayer

In my personal opinion, that sword is very plain and utilitarian looking, and the one with the fuller looks somewhat better than the one without. I saw on Tinker's website that the designed the fullered one to handle differently, and the specifications he listed for the fullered one were slightly different than the plain one. That was probably an early version though, and I'm not sure if that would still be true or not...

They are two different swords that look the same, they are for two different type of fighting, thats why they will Handel diferently...SanMarc.
To clarify, the non fullered is for full plate Armour and the fullerd is for light Armour and will make a better cutter againts bottles!!

Choose the one with the fuller. It reduces weight and adds both strength and flexibility.

It is already very light sword even without fuller so I would take non fullered version as a bit more far out PoB will help you with cutting.

It reduces weight and adds both strength and flexibility. A fuller doesn't really add strength and this sword isn't meant to be flexible anyway, as it is a stiff cut and thrust sword. I'd go with the one Tom reviewed... cuts very well and handles even better it seems. Don't remember which one it was but just look it up. I think in that thread they also discussed that question so it might be helpful.

I have the fullered one... its super light and quick.. however, like all Hanwei swords I have ever seen, you'll want to sharpen it a bit. It handles much quicker then the VA Long sword... it feels better in one hand then the VA does... but its not much to look at thats for sure.

After seeing Tom's pictures, definitely fullered. And take Slakitude's advice and buy from Wiwingti, naturally.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. ;D It's about 50/50, though... I like 'em both! ;D I'm more concerned about functionality than aesthetics, so I'm kind of just wondering if the fullered one will be too 'blade light' to handle and cut well in 2 hands... -Slayer

You may lose money, but you will be considered a hell of a sport!!

The one Tom chose was the one with a fuller by the way. Here's the link.

I recall his post-sharpening reaction was something akin to "Yesssss!" I'd been thinking of buying one (since they're so cheap now ) to make into a single-hander. Love the blade profile, but the hilt just looks too long for it IMO.

If only there were somewhere that would let you handle both swords to decide for yourself which one to get. What cruel misfortune.

^This. ;D In fact, there is. Just not close enough to me! I'm thinking about ordering them both from KoA, and then returning whichever I don't want. Ryan at KoA is a really cool guy and I'm sure he'd be cool with that. I like what Tom said about the fullered version, but it looked more like he thought that was a 1-hander with a grip long enough for two hands, rather than the other way around. I strongly prefer two-handers, so I want it to function best when used in that manner. Thanks for all the opinions, guys! Keep 'em comin! ;D -Slayer

After seeing Tom's Review I'd probably go for the fullered version myself. I'd dearly love to put one of those bad boys through the custom sword shop with a belt and re-done grip and scabbard... *drools* edit: for more deliciousness

Ceebs- Indeed, except that I plan on doing the leather work myself. Sonny does do really nice stuff though; I'm planning on ordering a GSOW through the CSS just because I have an idea that's a bit out of my skill range, and I trust his work explicitly. -Slayer
