It seems to still be considered a dao, anyway, going by the term "datang dao."
Kinda funny, since it ought to be closer to a Jian performance wise.

Just looks like a kind of Jian that wasn't fully sharpened along the spine...

Can't say I've ever seen a dao in this style. Technically, I guess it's still a dao due to only one fully sharpened length. Why not, since scissors are also technically dao (jian dao)

Not sure how historically accurate they are, but I've seen it in zheng-wu's website and this one on wikipedia:

Okay, it seems that the type of Dao pictured is actually referred to as a "single edged jian." This comes from the book "The Complete Taiji Dao" and what I have been able to read of it off Google Books, but I can't seem to find the Chinese term at the moment. Sorry. I don't have better information, but Garrett at Jin-Shi or gunndoggy would probably be able to set you straight.

Oh boy PMing is a horrible way to get hold of me... I only check once every couple months or so. I've only heard it referred to as a "Tang dao". Performance-wise it handles like other straight sabres (zhi bei dao) of the period, but with a false edge. Antique example in a Japanese museum. Classified as a national treasure. Next stage of evolution is curvature. There is also an antique example classified as a Japanese national treasure, but I can't seem to dig it up. The famous Kogarasu.
