I realize this is an older post and few people will read this but... First off, Im not one to say what you can and cant post on this site, but, seeing as lightsabers ARE a form of sword (at least as scantily referred to in a dictionary) and are definitly fantasy, I think its perfectly fine. Second, real lightsabers arent made of light at all. Or lasers. If the blade was a laser it would go on indefinitly unless there was some sort of mirror to reflect it, and even then it would just go everywhere when you swing the lightsaber. Regardless of saying that you couldnt cut or block anything since it would be like swinging flashlights at each other. Real lightsabers are made of plasma. esentially, on the end of the hilt there would be a type of magnetic projector that fills with plasma. When you press the "on" button, this magnetic tube would project and fill with liquid plasma (the same stuff in your plasma tv), then, since plasma is magnetic, it would be forced to stay in the magnetic "tube" when you swing the lightsaber. The lightsaber would be able to cut about anything since plasma is extremely hot. And you would be able to block another swing from somebody elses lightsaber because plasma is sort of like gel and is there for a sort of solid and the magnetic "tubes" would block the other lightsaber anyway. There is an actual, real lightsaber in... Germany? Somewhere in europe. The biggest problem is a power source, not the technology to do it.
But, this is probably boring. As for a lightsaber you can get now, I think most of the ideas expressed here are excellent
