There are ways to grip that thing that would resolve the issue rather well, also.

The metal on the hilt of the Windlass Beowulf is cheap pot metal that will shatter like glass under any serious stress. At their after Thanksgiving sale, they had about 30 of those in the return bin that had the rings broken off and the hilt pieces broken like they were made from clay - all damaged in shipping. Additionally, the white parts are molded plastic, not even bone. There were way too many of them in the return bin for it to be anything other than a really bad design built with really bad materials.
Please, for the love of God, do not buy one of those. Well, you can if you want to, but don't say I didn't warn ya.

I remember one or more of our members reported that their (plastic) rings broke off their (plastic) pommels, but was the rest of the sword as bad? I think a similar problem happened to the Saxon though, its hilt broke, but still, if you don't have a pommel, you can't use the sword. Granted that you fix that though, I'd take a Windlass over a Depeeka (i can't even spell it right...) any day... @sanmark: you said somewhere that you have the (Windlass) Sword of the Viking King, how's that one?

Had, I sold it, it was Eye candy at its best, but the blade was "Whippy" had more flex and sag that my Classisc that I now have, the pommel and hilt were to big, would look great in a pic, but up close, to big, if your going to use it for show, then its nice, but I use my swords for show and go, that is for cutting weeds and stuff as well as wearing it at the events..............SanMarc.

I don't go to faires and stuff, so I need my swords for go mostly, even though some show is nice as well How's your Classic doing, I send mine to Slayer to make it pretty. One of the better Windlass-made swords IMO.

Well, I have the flu, so it is sitting right here next to me as we speak, I am going to put an edge on it and when I'm better, do some cutting with it before I turn it into a Viking sword, and so far, I'm in agrence with you, But the fittings are out side my time frame, but the blade is not, so a little mix and match....SanMarc.

I think my eyes are going to burn out of my head from all the computer shopping around for a working Viking sword. Background: I spent a number of years in my youth in an SCA Viking War-band. I'm a little long in the tooth for that sort of thing today but I've always wanted a real Viking sword. This will not be a wall-hanger but something I will beat against a pell. I want to see if I can actually handle a real sword like I did in the SCA, and I expect it to slice and dice if need be, you know...during the Zombie Apocalypse and such. I really like the look of the Saxon Long Sword and the Beowulf with the smaller guard, but I don't want something with plastic parts on it. My DW has offered to get me a sword of my choice for my up coming birthday in February. We're looking for something in the sub $300 dollar range but a little more is possible. I'd like it sharpened if possible and ready to go out of the box. I'll learn how to sharpen a sword on something a little more economical. I'm retired military, combat veteran, and not exactly a little guy at 6'2" and 245. I've got a fair amount of gray in my beard that was hard earned but I'm still in good enough shape to raise more than a little hell. This will be my first "real" sword purchase and I'd like to do it right. My next target will be a working Katana to re-live a little of the Ken-do I practiced also back in the day. After that....who knows! I hear this stuff is addicting! I'm Scottish on both sides so perhaps a William Wallace great sword? But for now...a Viking Broad Sword is where I want to start.

Of those, the Gen2's (especially the Witham) or the Hanwei/Tinker would get MY vote, but I've heard good things about the Stickelstad.
I can't remember if Ricwilly had the KC or Valiant viking...I think the KC...but he seems to rate it as a bit heavy, but a fine performer. I'd stay away from those, myself.
I'd also avoid windlass...mostly...but then I'm just not fond of their (and their reseller's) idea of "sharp" swords.
I know it's at the top end of your pricepoint, but I'd really go for the Witham...though someone here had the other Gen2 and rated it okay.

Ok, heres your revised list, as to the VA's, they are the ealyer ones that were like tanks, and not like the DSA ones....

For the prices, SanMarc's list is it! Those all meet the criteria IMO as well. I suggest picking whichever one of those pleases your aesthetic senses the most.
