Compared to the cutting performance of swords, I have found machetes disappointing. Even with both blades sharpened to shaving, my swords will out cut my machetes every time Is that due to the swords having longer blades and therefore more speed at the part of the blade doing the cutting It's always tempting to take a sword instead of a machete into the woods knowing the sword would cut better

Ah, the ol' car analogy. I tried to come up with an analogy that wasn't cars...but couldn't. How about this one from personal experience? Motorcycles: Dirt bikes and street bikes? having owned both, neither one works very well out of it's intended element, with the street bike handling horribly in loose sand, gravel or mud. Try to take a corner on a road with a dirt bike as fast as you could with a street bike, and you will crash Ooooh, good one!

I actually like the car analogy. Then again, I only thought of it myself a while ago. I didn't know it was so well established it needs retirering. >.>
...How about musical instruments? That work as an analogy?

"Dadao" is chinese for "machete" so thats not a good example Ok, no it's not, but the dimensions of the two are very similar. As far as machetes being indestructible and swords made of glass... I have a 24" machete which HAS taken a set after I went rip roaring with it. It was no big deal, I just put it over my knee and took it out, pretty much the same way I take a set out of the sword. I think the main difference is length. You don't hear about to many gladiuses... gladi?... gladius-style-swords taking a set, and for the most part they seem to have the same indestructibility of machetes. With shorter blades there is less room for error and a lot less leverage being applied to any given point. What I'm kinda waiting for is a reproduction, carbon steel machete from "The Book of Eli" it's more or less a short sword.

That one does look nice. But the overall shape isn't too far off from a Chinese Ox-Tail Dao. BTW Da Dao actually means "big knife" so not quite a machete. I was corrected about that a few times.
