I ordered a replacement blade for the H/T longsword a couple of weeks ago. I have a couple of qualms about it, nothing earth shattering, and I still think they're great blades. Typical production sword QC issues. Here's the skinny: This blade shipped direct from Hanwei in a cardboard tube. There was a plastic tip protector on it, but it was the wrong size for the blade, so the tip got bent anyway. No big deal, a few minutes with a file will straighten that out. I am mating the blade to an old Windlass guard. The tang on this blade is .250 thick, which is quite impressive. It took some work to file out the guard to recieve it. When I got to that point, it seemed no matter how I situated the blade, I couldn't get both edges to point straight out twd the tips of the guard. Here's why: No big deal really, but then there's this: The shoulders are uneven too. Rather than mess with the blade,I decided to rework the guard until the blade sits straight in it. It's not pretty at the moment. I don't mean to discourage people from buying these blades, on the contrary, it's a great design and for the price, you aren't going to get a better one anywhere. It seems to be properly heat treated, decently stiff, but not difficult to bend. That's all. Back out to the workshop now. Got a sword to work on.

Sorry to see the QC issues with your blade. On the other hand, it is good to see that this generation of H/T blades is properly rounded where the shoulders meet the tang; when they were not rounded - people had a problem with them breaking.
Keep us posted on your project.

Bummer. Yeh, the tip would be no problem, even I can fix that... but the bend and the uneven blade shoulders, kinda a let down. Can't wait to see your finished product!

I wonder how it would've turned out if you'd tried to mate it with a H/T guard...considering the price, I think its a good deal, provided someone, like you, has the know-how to deal with the minor inconsistencies.
