I used to think that lower end modern chain mail was pretty similar to original chain mail, except that it used mild steel instead of iron. Although I read an article about about historical chain mail, and it would seem that it was actually much better than many people seem to think against arrows and other piercing weapons, which is not true for cheap modern mail, which typicaly uses larger links and no rivets. I've heard mild steel and wrought iron have fairly similar properties, although how true this is, IDk. What would you say would provide superior overall protection?

roman chainmail was the best at puncture/cut resistance it was a combo of round and flat riveted rings about 6 mill or less in diameter. it was tested and about a 1/16 of a arrow tip penetrated it

In terms of protection, I'd say they're both the same. Most ancient mail was fire hardened after assembly, but would bend under strong impact, while modern mail would break under strong impact.

It depends on what you get and who makes it. Quality varies wildly, just as it always has.
Also important is what you will use it for. You're not using it for defense and don't need a heavy, riveted steel hauberk if you just want to look pretty at Renne-Faires. You also are not going to want to wear too heavy of a hauberk in SCA combat because you still need to add rigid defense under or over it in the vital areas. But you will want a hauberk, in that situation, that will not be broken to bits by multiple blunt impacts.
So... A lot of things factor in to determine which is better...
...For you.
