A friend of my sister has an old Katana that his grandfather brought back from Japan in WWII, I haven't seen it yet but it is apparently not one of the military issued ones but one that had been in a Japanese family. Anyway the guy doesn't really know anything about it and from his description it sounds like there is an oxide layer on the blade, he describes it as being very dark colored but without rust and he doesn't remember it ever being oiled. So would it be a good idea to just oil the blade and tell him to find a professional to see if it can be re polished or would it be okay to clean and oil it to see if it is just a thin layer of oxide that will come off before he goes to a professional?

Consult with a proffessional; take lots of good pictures and send them along with your inquiry. Avoid abrasives or chemical cleaners. For now, oiling it shouldn't hurt, but it probably won't "fix" anything. Granted, it will slow further decay if kept up properly.
Share any pictures with us, too; we like these things.

No, don't ever touch a traditional blade unless you are a professional, you might accidentally devalue it or stuff it up. Always, always send it to a professional polisher.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, just apply oil and be done, I do intend to get lots of photos to try to get him some info about the sword. He didn't know that the tang would have writing on it when the tsuka was removed. It's funny I have loved the katana since I first saw Highlander when I was seven or eight and here is a guy that has a genuine article and doesn't know much at all about them.

He's going to bring it by next time I see him but I don't know when that will be, I'll see what he wants to do though.

I used to have a buddy in Plano, but he's since relocated...twice.
Swing over to Mr. Davis' place; if I were close enough he'd be a "first stop" for me.
