Check it out. www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/miscellaneous/9080/Alright, now before you all point out the fact that their chainmail would probably crumble into fine aluminum pixie dust if a dragon so much as sneezed on it, let me ask you something. I've come to you all because I see that there is a collective knowledge of expertise in this field here on this site far greater than what I can find in the hollow slabs of meat that echo with incompetence which comprises my companion's heads, and I need a question answered. I'm looking for aluminum chainmail armor for my Renaissance Faire outfit. It is to be purely decorative and will NOT be hit by a foam sword wielding overweight Trekky who still shares a bed with his mother. Obviously I chose aluminum because of it's light weight. So now the question: Do you think the Full Sleeve Riveted Aluminum Chainmail Shirt being sold by ThinkGeek for $189.99 will suit my purpose, or is there a better deal I should be looking for? Up for debate: How hard does a dragon sneeze?

It's not really worth it, to be honest. You will lose rings pretty quickly and stain everything you are wearing (as well as your arms and hands) black. The shirt would last you about 2 faire seasons, then need to be tossed. I recommend only one brand of costume mail. It's called Ringmesh, and it is made from lightweight welded stainless steel. A shirt weighs as much as a regular jacket, it will never loose rings, and it has a lifetime warranty. You can't even tell you are wearing the stuff. There is a thread on it here: /index.cgi?action=display&board=armour&thread=13798&page=1 And here is the webpage: www.ringmesh.com

If you can wait till Feb or Early March I'll do a review. I'm even getting the gloves cause I could use them at work!

Thanks for the feedback Odin. I didn't consider that it could oxidize all over my clothes.
Sparky, I'll be looking forward to hearing your review on the ringmesh as well.
From what I can tell on the website, the ringmesh looks very fine, and I was hoping for a more period look. However, the price/quality of ringmesh seems unbeatable to me, but if anyone knows of a manufacturer that makes quality period-style aluminum chainmail for a decent cost, please let me know!

...May I answer the second question? Depends on the size and type of the dragon. Don't let the big ones sneeze on ya' though; you'll be covered in smoky, charred goo and stuck to the ground, as the force will knock you on your bottom. ;D -Midori Kurogami of Sword N Armory (Whose other love is dragons and all things reptile )

Continuing the hunt for affordable chainmail that wont fall apart too easily. I've broadened my horizons and am willing to purchase steel as well (instead of just aluminum). www.wholesalearmor.com/STEELChainmail.htmlWould the cheap armor sold at sites like these be worth it, or do you all think they would come apart easily/oxidize all over me? If the only decent chainmail is over $500 Im just gonna go with ringmesh.

I agree with Odin and Sparky... Ringmesh is the S&*T. I want a suit of that myself... hell, you can clean it by tossing it in the dishwasher! However, as you mention... it is not very period looking... if thats super important to you... look into some Riveted Alluminum Chainmail... Hanwei makes a couple suits around the same price as the Ringmesh. I prefer the ringmesh because its useable steel, still light and will never break... but you can get the look of period armour without the weight but still not be lossing rings all the time just by walking around with some Riveted Chainmail. I think MRL sells some as well.

Do not get Butted aluminum. It is too soft and the rings will stretch and open just from the weight over time. Get the riveted.

The Think Geek link posted is riveted aluminum. Pretty good price too. That Ringmesh looks really nice. I just might get me some of that. Trying hard to talk myself out of it.

The thinkgeek looks good to me. It's riveted, and with no one whacking on it, you shouldn't be losing any rings. If you spray it with a sealant of some kind or oil it, (preferably oil) you won't have it oxidizing all over you andthe oil will even add to the period look. And the price isn't bad.
I don't see any reason Not to get it. Even if you were to get it for LARP, wherein it Would "be hit by a foam sword wielding overweight Trekky who still shares a bed with his mother" it should do just fine as aluminum really isn't That weak and it Is riveted and it's a foam sword wielded by a LARPer rather than a SCAdian with some actual muscle and skill beating you with a solid stick perfectly capabale of breaking your bones. I wouldn't wear it for the latter...

Thanks for the replies and feedback.
Could someone advise (or link) me about some ways to maintain chainmail? I understand stainless steel wouldn't require much attention, but as for regular steel/aluminum?
Thanks very much!

Wipe it down with a damply oil-soaked rag and store (and wear) it on top of some cloth you don't mind getting oil and oxidized metal stains on. It's pretty simple, and I'd probably do the same for stainless steel. Stainless steel is Resistant to oxidation, not immune.

Forgive the inexperience, but could you specify the kind of oil thats best for preserving chainmail? Other wise I'll go fetch the bottle of vegetable oil in the kitchen...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T DO THAT UNLESS ZOMBIES THREATEN TO EAT THROUGH YOUR HALF-RUSTED ARMOUR THE NEXT DAY!!!! Vegetable oil will rot is the problem- causing long-term problems. WD-40 is probably your best bet, or whatever you oil your swords with.

I'm actually planning on getting some of the Thinkgeek riveted aluminum, maybe I'll wear it to school and start a new fashion craze.
