Handshake grip requires less space on the grip even without looping your fingers over the guard. And on a viking sword your little finger should rest on the side of the pommel so that you need even less space. Edited for pictures: I have a very small hand so this looks a bit weird but you can see the difference between these grips clear enough I hope. Handshake proved much more effective and secure for me during both dry handling and cutting. Hammer: Handshake:

and that is why viking swords get shorter grips usually (though not always as it turns out) take about 3/4 of an inch off the length of that grip and it would fit Luka prefectly.
your handshake grip is taking less room because you are properly palming the pommel, if you held it in handshake entirely on the grip like a wakizashi the handshake would take more room.

How would you rate Valiant Armoury? Saw their Norsemans Sword, granted the authetics aren't quight what I'm looking for but hey for that price I can't expect everything. I saw some people touched on Gen 2, how are they? 8th century viking looks ok. Maybe if I can just find a Type X blade and make everything else myself... or maybe if I could find guard and pummel to... ok I can make handles I'm just not sure about the other stuff... To bad I missed that H/T Viking sale, I was waiting on funds and they didn't come in time.

when it Comes to Valiant Armoury, stay out of their standard line. anything that is new is really, really good, anything that is old is, well, not.
for example the Norseman you are looking at is listed as having a 28" blade (a bit too short for a type X in my opinion though I 'm sure there were SOME of the type) and it weighs in at 4lbs 3 oz
here's a math problem for you:
28" blade + 4lbs 3 oz = way too heavy, just go swing a crow bar. yeesh
that sword, I do NOT reccomend.

Standard line will soon be redisigned. New Norseman might be worth waiting.

indeed there is a LOT of amazing stuff coming from Valiant Armoury, just don't get confused by their older stuff, that is NOT representative of what they are doing now.
the standard line redesigns wil become part of the practical/performance cutting line. as far as I know
